Obituary of Charles Cook
William ‘Charles’ Cook was born to Ralph and Sarah Cook in December, 1947 at The Pas, Manitoba. Charles married his soul mate and fighting partner, Clara (Chaboyer) on December 16th,1978. They had 43 wonderful years together. They had four children: William (Bill), Cadena, Carrie and lost one. Charles worked as a heavy equipment operator at numerous companies in Alberta for at least 15 years. He also obtained his level 4 carpentry. He worked for SERM in Cumberland House for 23 years. He also worked as a guide for 30 years and as a maintenance man for CHCN.
He loved his family very much. He enjoyed taking his kids fishing upriver and taking them camping. He always made a rink behind his house for his children and other children of the community to enjoy. He taught his children to drive at an early age. He was an avid coach for at least 20 years, coaching various sports and he was especially proud of his ‘lil’ Cree hockey team. He taught his children and kids he coached how to be respectful and humble towards others. He instilled good values in his children.
Charles often remarked about his early childhood living in a small cabin in the bush. Growing up, he and his family relied on hunting, fishing, and trapping for much of their livelihood. He was fluent in Cree as it was his first and primary language. He did not learn English until later on in his childhood. His love for the bush continued to stay with him in his later years as he always pursued his love for hunting, fishing and camping. Even when he was too weak to hunt and fish, he would still go out for walks so he would be surrounded by nature. He enjoyed exercising and fixing things in his shed and around his house. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and he had a special relationship with each of them. He was especially proud of his chapan, Bria; they spent a lot of time together right up unto his passing. Charles will be missed dearly by his wife, children, grandchildren and chapan.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Clara Cook; his children: William (Bill) (Robyn) Cook, Cadena (Travis) Deschambeault, Carrie (Bill) Dorion and Kali (Sonny Boy) Dussion; his grandchildren: Hannah Cook, Cianna Cook, Billie Cook, Kingston Deschambeault, Travis (Doon) Deschambeault Jr., Kaibree Deschambeault, William (Pep) Cook, Preston Cook and Caleb Dorion; his chapan, Bria; his siblings, James (Mary Jane) Cook, Eleanor Cook, Abel (Claire) Cook, Danny Cook, Edward (Evelyn) Cook and Mervin Cook.
