Catherine Elliott Arthur-MacDonald, 70, of Regina, Saskatchewan, died on October 30th, 2022, in Regina, from complications arising from cancer.
Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Regina, on December 9th at 11:00 am, with Dean Michael Sinclair officiating. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Speers.
Catherine was born in Wilmington, Delaware to John Elliott Arthur and Esther Austin Arthur, on 24 December 1951. She spent early years in Germany and in several locations in the United States where her father was posted with the US Army. She graduated from Ferguson High School in Newport News, Virginia. Her further studies were at East Carolina University (Bsc) and Guy’s Hospital Medical School of the University of London (MSc in Human Communication). She worked as a Speech and Language Pathologist in Newport News, in Saskatoon, and for most of her career at the Regina Public School Board. In addition to Speech and Language Pathology, Catherine served as Co-ordinator for Special Education and as an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher at Thompson Community School, where she was a caring friend, as well as a teacher, to many children from difficult circumstances. Catherine was a major contributor to the process leading to provincial legislation governing her profession and she served for several years with the national body responsible for reviewing professional standards for speech and language pathology in health and education institutions throughout Canada. Catherine was honoured several times with awards from her professional colleagues. Catherine cherished a lifelong friendship with her Alpha Delta Pi sisters. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Cathedral and was involved in Strawberry Fair, Altar Guild and Vestry for many years. In addition she was a volunteer for the Mackenzie Art Gallery and Grandmothers for Grandmothers.
Catherine is survived by her husband Alex of Regina, their children James and Colin and their grandson Gavin. She is also survived by her sisters Sharon and Kim (Jay) and her brothers John (Jesse) and Chuck (Dianne), her Canadian in-laws and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Canada. She was preceded in death by her mother Esther, her father John, her stepmother Audrey and her brother-in-law Bill.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Cathedral [1861 McIntyre Street, Regina, S4P 2R2] and the Hospitals of Regina Foundation [225-1874 Scarth Street, Regina S4P 4B3]. The family thanks the compassionate staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre, the General Hospital Emergency Department and the Palliative Care unit at the Pasqua Hospital.
