Catherine Rosie Sayies (nee Cook) known to friends as “Rose” passed away on Thursday, August the 11, 2022 at the Flin Flon General Hospital, at the age of 92.
Rose was born in South Valley, SK on February 3, 1930 to parents Thomas Edward Cook of Cumberland House, SK and Mary Sarah Cook (nee Moose) of Nelson House, MB. Rose was the second eldest of six children. Rose attended school until grade 3 when her parents took the family to live at a remote trap line near South Indian Lake, MB, for a better life and avoid the residential school system.
She was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, mother and grandmother throughout her life. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced her moments with them. She had both a kind and vivacious personality and loved to laugh. She enjoyed her time at Berge Lake where you would find her fishing, hunting and berry picking. Rose always worked hard; gardening, gathering, cooking and cleaning for her family. She loved singing, dancing and listening to Gabriel play the fiddle.
Rose married her husband Gabriel Thomas Sayies in Sherridon, MB on October 1, 1949. They began making a family and set off as pioneers in a new northern mining town where they helped move houses from Sherridon to Lynn Lake. They lived a happy life together raising their 8 children and welcomed many grandchildren to the world in both Leaf Rapids and Lynn Lake until her husband Gabriel passed away on October 4, 1984.
She stayed in Lynn Lake where she began dating her partner, Ron Latimer, for over 20 years until he passed away on February 15, 2008. She then lived with her daughters until dementia took a toll on her health and was eventually moved to the Lynn Lake Hospital where she was one of the original settlers living in the town. Due to an abrupt nurse staffing shortage, she was transferred to Flin Flon Hospital where she passed away 2 weeks later.
Rose was predeceased by all her siblings, Lyna (Dale) Moose (nee Cook) of Wanles, MB, Lillian (David) Brightnose (nee Cook), Stanley (Josephine) Cook, James “Jimmy” Cook, Jerry Cook all of Cranberry Portage, MB. Her children Mary Jean (Mike) Lysohirka (nee Sayies) of Thompson, MB, Madeline Sayies of Hemmingford, QB, Victoria Godin (nee Sayies) of Winnipeg, MB, Donovan Sayies of Thompson, MB.
