Peacefully on Monday, February 14, 2022 at The Temiskaming District Hospital Catherine “Cathy’ Leaton (nee Spencer) of New Liskeard passed away at the age of 72. At her side and holding her hand was her husband of 50 years, Harold Leaton. Beloved mother to Penny Durrant (Chuck), Peter Leaton (Sara Munroe) and Scott Leaton (Tiffany Stow). She was loved and adored by her grandchildren Aidan, Darby, Brynn, Kiera, Danica, Owen and Benn. Dear sister of Wendy Adams, Jane Spencer and the late Shirley Spencer. Cathy was a kind and thoughtful woman. She was generous with her time and her skills. In her early years of teaching Family Studies she taught so many to cook and sew. She taught the boys to cook their rabbit and the girls to sew their prom dresses. In the later years she taught her grandchildren to make pastry, a skill that was entirely lost on Penny, but mastered by Aidan, Darby and Brynn . Benn’s peanut butter cookie recipe is still on her fridge door for his visits. Danica wore so many hand knit purple sweaters, but Cathy got a huge giggle out of the hat she knit for Kiera’s horse. Her grandkids were an endless joy. She also shared her knitting skills with her circle at The Match Factory. The time spent knitting was exceeded by the time spent talking and sharing. Cathy was a social lady and her need to know what was going on came from the bottom of a kind and generous heart. She wanted to know that you were happy and would listen for hours to help where she could. Her life with Harold was both a farm life and city life. She was proud of the life they built and the children they raised. Harold grew the crops and Cathy fed the workers. She knit sweaters from the wool of the sheep and roasted the turkeys for the big family dinners that we so enjoyed. If you could get her to make her butter tarts or her rhubarb custard pie you were in for a wonderful treat. Her children kept her entertained and busy. She was proud of Penny and Chuck’s business and took every opportunity to order lunches for friends and family. Peter’s cross country adventures amazed her for his endless go and success. Scott kept her on her toes with his constant moves but made her so happy when he returned home. Her children relied on her for her advice, her support and her recipes. She listened when we needed an ear and gave the best hugs. She had a song for everything and despite her belief that she couldn’t sing we loved every one of them. She was loved by many and will be missed, but our memories are with us always. Cremation has taken place at Lakeview Crematorium, Haileybury. Friends will be received on Saturday, February 19th from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Buffam Leveille Funeral Home, 705-672-3122. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada or to your local food bank. Online condolences accepted at www.buffamleveille.com
