Cary Malcom Ashton
Captation des rituels
St-Augustine wrote that, “the key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.” Carey has done just that. Early Tuesday morning, March 8th, 2022, Carey peacefully passed away at his home. He was 62 years old. His wife of almost 35 years, Sharon (Brackley) was with him as he left. His children Wayne, Rebecca (Zakary Bowles), and Taylor were also by his side. He was an amazing father and a great husband. His family was his life.
Born in Nova-Scotia while his father Malcolm served in the Navy, he and his two sisters Kim, and Camille (Ray Tapp) were raised by their mum, Beverley (Hurst) until the family moved back to Montreal, where his youngest brother, Stuart (Serina Mathai) was born.
Carey wasn’t given an easy road, being diagnosed at 8 years old with Muscular Dystrophy, his prognosis wasn’t good. He fought an uphill battle his entire life. Hills and wheelchairs don’t mix, but he was blessed with wonderful friends that were always there to raise him up. Sharon, his angel, devoted her life to taking care of him. A gambler, betting against Carey, would have lost money. With the help of his friends and family, he beat all odds!
If you were lucky enough to have met him, you would know that Carey was one of the funniest guys in the world. Faster than a Pedro Martinez heater, he’d hit you with a few quick words that would leave you doubled over in laughter. Carey used that wit and humour to communicate with people on a deeper and more personal level. This is what made him an incredible coach.
Sports were Carey’s passion and baseball turned into one of his greatest accomplishments. Always being on the sidelines gave him a perspective that few would have had. He was a student of every sport he watched. Eventually, he became the teacher. He started coaching youth baseball when his son played. He continued coaching for over a decade with NDG Baseball. He led team after team to six provincial titles, representing Quebec six times at the Little League National Championships and was one win away from representing Canada at the Little League World Series in 2004. During much of that time he was also a bench coach with McGill University Baseball.
In the words of David Ogilvy, “Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ballpark. Aim for the company of immortals.” Carey is in good company.
A celebration of Carey’s life will be held March 24th between 2:30P.M. and 4:00P.M. at Urgel Bourgie 1275 Dollard Ave, Lasalle, Quebec H8N 2J1. In lieu of flowers, donations to Muscular Dystrophy Canada in Carey’s name would be greatly appreciated.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Cary Malcom Ashton 2022..
