Obituary for Carol Kapitany
The family of Carol Kapitany (nee St. Hill) are deeply saddened to announce her sudden, but peaceful, passing at Sunnybrook Hospital on the evening of Holy Saturday, 16th April, 2022, following a brief illness. Carol’s last day was filled with the company of family and friends who told her how much she was loved.
Carol was lovingly cared for by Nurse Sophie and the kind and caring staff of D2 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Carol is predeceased by husband Erno Kapitany and sister Eleanor Pilgrim. Carol leaves behind her loving twin sister Barbara St. Hill-Skinner, family in Barbados, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and great nieces and great nephews. Family in Barbados include Dathney McConney, Averille Lovell and Glenda Gay. In Toronto, Sylvia Anderson (Curtis Anderson).
Carol was born in the parish of St. Michael on November 28, 1933, on the tiny island of Barbados in the Caribbean and attended The St. Michael’s Girls’ School. After graduation, Carol pursued her interest in education and opened and directed a pre-school.
Carol came to Canada in 1957 with her mother and settled in Montreal with her sisters. She attended College, studying business and key punch. She worked at Reader’s Digest, joining Barbara, and after 10 years of service, went to work at CIBC. In Montreal, Carol met Erno Kapitany, and they married in 1974.
Carol and Erno then moved to Toronto in the 1980’s where Barbara had already settled. Carol’s move followed a transfer to CIBC main branch where she worked until her retirement.
While working at CIBC, Carol attended Metropolitan Toronto University (the former Ryerson Polytechnical Institute) taking business and computer courses. She also attended the University of Toronto, taking English literature courses.
Carol and Erno were amongst the first residents at Glen Gardens Apartments when it opened. After more than 30 years at Glenn Gardens, Carol became a matriarch figure and dear friend to residents. She made newcomers feel welcomed, caring and helping others, with her friendly approach.
On retirement Carol remained very active. She was a keen musician, playing piano, and up to the week of her death she took lessons from Esther Lerner. Carol liked bowling, taking photos and videos, she was the family archivist and loved people. She loved life, was caring and loving to her family and friends. She liked going to concerts, shopping in Kensington Market and going to Harbourfront with her family. Carol was keenly interested in the advancement of health and the development of new treatments, medications and surgical procedures, and she volunteered for many health studies at local hospitals and universities.
Carol was an active member of the Church of the Ascension. She attended Women Supporting Women at her church every Wednesday and had been present with several of the women on the Wednesday she became seriously ill.
