Carol’s Obituary
Carol Ann Smith (nee Adams) aged 73 years, passed away unexpectedly in her home in Balmertown, Ontario on March 27, 2022.
Carol’s entry into the world on December 15, 1948 was also unexpected. Carol was supposed to be delivered in Red Lake, Ontario at the old Red Cross hospital. Her Aunt Rose Imrie, a nurse, had arranged to work there so she could assist at the birth. But the weather that December was very mild, and with no passable highways in the area then, the only way to get to Red Lake from Balmertown was the ice road. Unfortunately, the ice was not firm enough yet to travel on, so the only option was to go to the hospital at Cochenour which was accessible by Bomardier taxi. Because of being born so close to Christmas, this made the season very special to her and she always celebrated it in her special style.
Carol was a fun-loving, caring and hard working person, whose family was always very important to her. She grew up in a home where music was very important, and it was always a favorite part of her life. Carol played piano, and taught herself the accordion. She could pick out tunes and play them by ear, which always made parties more enjoyable.
Carol was very competitive and enjoyed sports in her youth. She enjoyed curling and recently became a dedicated Blue Jays fan. She was an expert bridge player and enjoyed playing with a local club.
Carol worked for 32 years in the Assay Office at Campbell Mine in Balmertown (now owned by Evolution Mining). She achieved the position of Environmental Lab Technician before her retirement.
Because of her interest in family history, Carol did much research on the various branches of her family tree, particularly the Adams family, but also other lines as well. She was the family matriarch, knowing all the important dates and always keen to celebrate them. She discovered many long-lost cousins and kept in touch by email with them and with various historical societies in southern Ontario. Her knowledge of genealogy was so extensive that she was asked to teach a class about it at the Adult Education Centre. She corresponded with several authors and provided information for their books.
She had a love of beautiful things like china and fine crystal, and used to enjoy bidding on ebay for items to complete her place settings. She set a fine table with special dinners at her house always being a grand occasion. The loss of her loving, joyful presence leaves a huge gap in our family, but we will strive to remember her with the honour she deserves.
Carol was previously deceased by her father Manley Adams in 2003, and her mother Isabelle (nee Westley) in 2014. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Brent Smith and her much loved son Brent James Smith of Winnipeg, Manitoba (Mary Lavigne), grandchildren Britney, and Chelsea Rose, sisters Joyce Adams, June Bryson (Tim), Phyllis VanDusen (Dennis), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre in her name through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
Funeral details will be released at a later date.
