On September 11, 2022, at the age of 88, Malcolm Campbell Sr. passed peacefully away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony with the comfort of his family by his side. Malcolm Sr. was born at Cape Norman on October 17, 1933 to Jacob and Mabel Campbell. He was one of eight children in a long line of Lighthouse Keepers. In 1955 Malcolm Sr. married the love of his life, Martha Brown of Wild Bight, and together spent many happy years raising their eight children.
Malcolm Sr. began his Lighthouse Keeper career in 1952 at the age of 18 and held station in Cape Norman, Gull Island, and his beloved Camp Islands; in total working happily for 44 years with Martha by his side. His pastimes involved fishing, hunting, berry picking, and practically anything associated with the outdoors. As his life progressed, he especially loved visits, calls, and his pictures of his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
He leaves to mourn: with fond and loving memories, his Children; Audrey (Levi), Dorothy (Gerald), Dennis (Cathy), Ula (Wayne), Malcolm Jr. (Sharon), Kevin (Jennifer), Gloria (John), David (Tobi); Grandchildren, Jamie (Candace), Travis (Chantal), Tonya, Vicki, Justin (Jessica) Jessica (Jonathan), Danielle, Stephanie, Alexander, Brandon, Jonathan, Grant, Katie, Bryan (Jenna), Eugene, Kyle (Katie), Ashley (Justin); Great-grandchildren, Peyton, Hailey, Jake, Mackenzie, Reagan, Ben, Blake, Jaxon, Freya, Roger; Brothers, Alvin, Lyle; Sisters, Marjorie, Elsie, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
He is predeceased by his Wife, Martha; Parents, Jacob and Mabel Campbell; Parents-in-law, James and Virginia Brown; Brother, Joseph (Elizabeth); Sisters-in-law, Jessie and Evelyn
Visitation to take place from Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony beginning the evening of Tuesday, the 13th of September, 2022 from 7-9 pm and will continue on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 from 2-4 pm. The family service will take place Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 2:00 pm from the St. Anthony United Church with Pastor Jeff Elliott officiating. Interment to follow. So sorry to hear of Malc’s passing. I always enjoyed times I spent with him on Gull Is. and Camp Islands while working for the Coast Guard. He loved to tease.
After he retired I would visit whenever I was in St. Anthony. I had my last visit with him in 2020 while we were on vacation. due to the Covid we had a fine chat on his doorstep. I know he will be greatly missed by his family. Godspeed Malc.
