Bun’s Obituary
Betts, Charles Wyman “Bun” – 102, Wentworth, passed away April 30, 2022 in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Wentworth, where he lived his whole life, Bun was a son of the late Arthur and Mabel (McNutt) Betts. Bun was a lumberman and operated the A.T. Betts and Sons lumber mill in Wentworth for over 45 years, retiring from the lumber business in 1982. He also worked at Ski Wentworth for over 60 years tuning, repairing and setting up skis. Bun and his brother Allison built the first ski lodge on the property. He last skied at the age of 93. Bun was an avid motorcyclist. He owned many different bikes from a Vespa scooter to a Goldwing and rode almost daily until he was over 100 years old. Bun was an honorary member of the Defenders Motorcycle Club of Amherst. Bun’s longevity in motorcycling was recognized by a number of newspapers and motorcycle magazines throughout Canada, Europe and the U.S. He was also a member of the Truro Flying Club and held a pilot’s license since 1971. He enjoyed flights to PEI and made some longer trips into Ontario. Known for his exceptional woodworking skills, many family and friends have samples of his work from grandfather clocks to bowls, tables and cabinets. Bun designed and built many tools that automated the mill as well as inventing tools for use at Ski Wentworth including boot dryers, a snowboard binding and pole basket pullers long before they were commercially available. Bun was admired by many as a humble, gentle soul with a great sense of humour and a sharp wit. He is survived by his devoted companion, Jean Wood; brother, Douglas (Carol Ann); several cherished nieces and nephews including Marjorie Fisher and her family who were also very special to Bun. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Jean Mayne; brother, Allison. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 5 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Oxford. The family requests that masks be worn by those in attendance. A private family graveside service will be held. Donations can be made to North Cumberland Memorial Hospital Foundation.
