It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bryce Gordon Dart after a valiant eight-year fight with cancer. A selfless husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Bryce passed away at the age of 65 on September 5th at Hospice Halifax, surrounded by his family.
Bryce was born in Halifax to the late Seymour and Elizabeth “Bessie” Dart. He was predeceased by his older sister Sandra Dart and sister in-law Jeannie Bourgeois. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Helen (Portman); sons Alex (Ashley) and Andrew (Brenna); brother James (Deborah); grandchildren Bryson and Penelope; and aunt Lily (Drysdale). He also leaves behind countless loving relatives and friends, the hallmark of a life well lived.
Bryce was a dedicated public servant, spending 28 years in policing communications, including working the inaugural shift for the Bedford Town Police. He had a very fulfilling career and retired from Integrated Emergency Services as a supervisor.
One of the most important chapters of his life began when he met his soulmate, Helen, when they were both camp counsellors in Paradise, Nova Scotia. He loved spending time with his family, going to swim meets to watch sons Alex and Andrew, and playing with his beloved grandchildren. Bryce always looked forward to his vacations with family and friends, and spending time on the beach. In his early years he enjoyed keeping old cars on the road with his lifelong friend Howard.
A warm thank you to the many special friends and family members who supported Bryce and Helen since his diagnosis. Among them are Jim, Debby, Marc, Louise, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Patricia, Kathryn, Howard, Sharon, Bill, Jan, Cynthia and Alain.
A special thank you to his cousin Debby Drysdale for donating stem cells and extending Bryce’s life. He was forever grateful for this compassionate act of kindness that gave him one of life’s greatest gifts: meeting his grandchildren.
An additional thank you to Dr Yorke, Dr White, Dr Fraga, the nurses and staff at the Medical Day Unit and 8A, as well as the staff at Hospice Halifax.
A celebration of life will be held at the Bedford United Church on September 22nd at 3:00 PM with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Myeloma Canada, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or Hospice Halifax.
