Boyd Jeeninga Wednesday March 16th 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Husband, Father, Opa and Great – Opa at the age of 92. He left his earthly home on March 16, 2022 while residing at Concordia Place. Freed from his suffering, he slipped peacefully into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father. We will treasure the memories we have, never forgetting how much he loved us and how much we loved him. He is now safe in the arms of Jesus.
Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 66 1/2 years, Frances and his five daughters, Claire, Netty (Sam), Sylvia (John), Yvonne (John) and Irene (Roger). He was Opa to 14 grandchildren, Eric, Mark (Shantel), Renee (Andrew), Glenn (Cass), Alyssa (Theo), Sheri (Daryl), Rheanne (Ian), Corrine, Dayna, Robyn, Charlene (Cory), Darcy (Grant), Jeremy, Evan and Great-Opa to 15 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Jan Jeeninga, sisters-in-law, Ina Jeeninga and Ans Jeeninga, a long time family friend Ronny, three brothers-in-law, Paul van Boven (Agatha), John van Boven (Jeanette) and Roelof Zwiers.
He is predeceased by an infant daughter, son-in-law Fred, his parents as well as his parents-in-law, four brothers, three sisters, four sisters-in-law and two brothers in-law.
Dad was born on October 16, 1929 in Heerlen, The Netherlands. He was the sixth of nine children born to Geugjen and Akke Jeeninga. Dad immigrated to Canada in 1954 leaving his family behind to follow Mom – his girlfriend at the time – and her family to Winnipeg. He boarded the ship “Groote Beer” on August 12, 1954 and arrived in Winnipeg on August 23, 1954. On August 25, 1955 he married Mom and they started a life together. They had six daughters, sadly their first child died at birth. They resided on Leola Street and that house was Dad‘s pride and joy. He stayed there, 61 years, until it was no longer possible to be on his own. Together Mom and Dad raised five daughters and watched the family grow from two people to a family of 47.
Dad had a gift of working with wood and he loved it! He could build anything and if something was broken there’s a good chance he could fix it with wood. Dad worked at three different companies, Acme Sash and Door, Newman Millwork and Woodland Supply. After Newman Millwork he was self-employed for a short time but found it to be stressful. Woodland Supply offered him a job and he stayed there until he retired, just shy of his 65th birthday. After retirement he kept busy in his garage/workshop. If you needed something, he was more than happy to make it. All of us have furniture made by Dad. Mom just had to suggest something and Dad would be building it, in his head. A few days later it was reality. We were so blessed!
Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling, spending time alone or with family. They enjoyed many trips to Smithers to visit Sylv, John and the girls and also travelled through Europe with his brothers and sisters. They had so much fun! Other highlights were road trips to the East and West Coast, holidays spent with John & Jeanette and all the trips to Clear Lake.
Dad was also an active member of the Transcona Christian Reformed Church and he valued Christian education. He loved the Lord and instilled his faith in his children. What a blessing to know he is with his Saviour!
Although Dad was always healthy, it became apparent that his memory began to fail him. He was able to stay at home until shortly after his 90th birthday. He had been on his own for one year and then joined Mom at Concordia Place, just before Christmas, 2019. We were happy that they could be together on the fourth floor.
Our family is so thankful to the staff at Concordia Place during his last two years. They were supportive, took good care of Dad, but also showed him love. He had his favourite healthcare aides, thank you for everything… you know who you are.
A private interment will take place on Friday, March 25, 2022 at Sunnyside Cemetery. The celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Transcona Christian Reformed Church, 131 Victoria Ave. W., Winnipeg Manitoba. Pastor Brian will be officiating the service.
