It is with great sadness that we share that Bonnie Fleming passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 19 at Kingston General Hospital with her beloved husband Mark at her side at the end.
Bonnie was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Doreen Sweet, and sister, Terry Sweet. She is survived by her husband Mark (married for 20 years); her sisters, Pauline Harrison (Bill), Brenda Smith (Cliff), Jean Marshall (late Robert), Joan Vopni (Garry), Jennifer Neilsen (Doug); brother Larry Sweet (Moya); goddaughter Jennifer Carpenter (David); and many nieces and nephews.
Bonnie attended Napanee District Secondary School and was an active member of the Napanee community. Bonnie met her husband Mark when she ran the Napanee bingo hall, and this is where his rugby team attended regularly.
Over the years, Bonnie and Mark supported, entertained and hosted many foreign exchange students and Bonnie was a mother figure to them, keeping in touch with them though social media and visits when they returned to Canada periodically.
Anyone that worked with Bonnie knew that she was organized and driven, always wanting to do it right!
Many knew that she faced significant health challenges, with both mobility issues and the loss of sight in one eye. This did not stop her from having fun, such as going to concerts (she was a master at getting tickets for herself and others), and extensive travel, which included Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Disney World, Nashville, New Orleans, Alberta and Pigeon Forge TN – Dollywood. Her love of social media was a way to keep in touch with family and friends, despite her mobility issues. She loved all animals, in particular dogs Willow (now deceased) and Nelson, who was her constant companion in recent years and will miss her greatly.
For a short time, Bonnie used her free time to operate a wedding photography business, www.gentleriverphotography.com, and thoroughly enjoyed doing something together with happy people on their special day.
Bonnie’s generous side was always there – like the candy dish on her desk for all to share and bags of candy to fill it, sometimes daily. When Covid-19 hit, she supported local online charity lotteries; this was her way to share some joy and give someone a smile as her winnings were passed along to her nieces and nephews, and the kids and grandkids of friends. She never forgot to include dedicated health care workers in her generosity.
Bonnie’s health declined significantly following the amputation of her leg in August 2019. She endured with the loss of things she liked to do. She continued to look for positive inspiration despite many health setbacks. Some of her favourite quotes were, “You can’t wait until life’s not hard anymore before you decide to be happy”; “Delete the what Ifs”; and “Kind people do beautiful things”. She found much inspiration and support online. One site, in particular, that impressed her was “AMC Princess” with details found at amcprincessana.com/aboutus/.
