Obituary
What’s not to love about a man who loved his wife, daughters, sons-in-law and grandsons – almost as much as he loved tracing his family tree, creating stained glass masterpieces, soaking up the Florida sunshine, entertaining family & friends, and falling asleep in front of the TV.
Bob Elliott was born in Montreal to British immigrants Ethel and Donald Elliott. Growing up in Longueuil, he was the eldest of 4 boys with Donald, Gil and John coming after him. Being so close to the Laurentian mountains, Bob was a great skier, only hanging up his ski boots in his early 60’s. And in the late 1950s/early 1960s, he was a competitive rally driver zooming through the winding mountain roads with brother Donald as navigator.
After completing school at Chambly County High in St Lambert, Bob started work in technical sales where he and lifelong friend Ron Anderson were regularly late for work (this may be where “Elliott Standard Time” first became a thing). But in spite of his tardiness, Bob continued to excel in his career, and often said “the harder I work, the luckier I get.”
One of his luckiest days came in 1959 when Bob met blonde bombshell Jean MacGregor. After briefly forgetting her name, he married the love of his life in 1961. Their honeymoon in Nassau began their lifetime love affair with travel and warmer climes.
Bob & Jean’s first home was in Boucherville where daughter Janet was born in 1962. The family then moved to Toronto in 1965 and Suzy came along a few weeks later. Settling in Richmond Hill, Bob launched himself into family and community life, as a sidesman at St Gabriel’s Anglican Church, president of the Kinsmen Club, chauffeur for Janet & Suzy’s piano lessons, Girl Guide meetings, skating lessons, and baseball practice. As a handy carpenter, he finished the basement in several of their family homes, and hardly complained at all when his in-laws decided they liked it so much they moved in!
After retiring at 60, Bob & Jean moved to Green Briar in Alliston where they once again embraced community life. Always one to help out with the Green Briar social and fund-raising events, Bob was best known for organising the community’s annual car rally and treasure hunt. In retirement he enthusiastically started tracing the Elliott and MacGregor family trees and became an avid genealogy enthusiast. After Jean’s stroke in 2006, Bob continued to lovingly and tirelessly care for her, but was still regularly seen at his barbecue with tongs in one hand and beer in the other.
And of course there was their life in Port St Lucie, Florida where Bob & Jean were snowbirds for many years. Once again they threw themselves into community life, where Bob became president of the Port St Lucie Canadian Club, not to mention enjoying innumerable meals at the world-famous Conchy Joe’s restaurant!
Travel wasn’t limited to Florida either: Many trips to England to visit daughter Suzy; Nova Scotia to visit the Inghams; Montreal to visit family; Scotland, Ireland, & Wales to visit more family; plus a Caribbean cruise, Hawaii, France, Belgium, and many more places in Canada & the States.
Throughout his life, family continued to be the most important thing to Bob (well, that and beer). Seeing Janet happily married to Kevin, and Suzy to Graham, he felt his life was complete when grandsons Brandon and Harry came along. After Jean moved into the Good Samaritan nursing home in Alliston, Bob followed her there, where he lived in a retirement apartment so he could continue to see the girl of his dreams every day. After Jean passed away in 2020, he still made the most of every day, but 2 broken hips and a spell of pneumonia was just a bit too much, even for Bob.
Rest in peace, Bob, in the great Lay-Z-Boy chair in the sky!
A service to remember Bob will be held at W John Thomas funeral home on Sunday 20th November. Visitation 1pm. Service 2pm, followed by refreshments. Internment to follow.
