CALLBECK: William (Bill)
April 25, 1927 – June 20, 2022
William (Bill) Callbeck, age 95 years of Watrous, passed away at Watrous District Health Complex on Monday, June 20, 2022.
Bill was born in the Stowlea District of St. Walburg, Saskatchewan, to Harold and Raymonde Callbeck. He married Dorothy Edwards June 25, 1954. They moved to Melfort, SK in 1963 where Bill was employed in the auto body business. In 1967 they moved to Watrous, SK after purchasing the building that is now Crack Master and started his own auto body business. Bill then built a new building that is now the detailing and wash rack at Mainline Motors.
After retiring from the auto body business, Bill and Dorothy fulfilled a dream of owning a fly-in fishing camp. They worked very hard cutting and peeling trees to build log cabins for the Lodge. They enjoyed the north and made many friends during this time. A forest fire destroyed Keith Lake Lodge and they started over again and built Hepburn Lake Lodge. With the help of many family members and friends, they started up again and enjoyed welcoming their customers.
After retirement Bill took over the garden spot, growing fruits and vegetables and bringing them in to Dorothy to freeze and preserve. He always thought grass and flowers weren’t as important, as you couldn’t eat them. After Dorothy passed away he continued to garden. Everyone in town would marvel at the garden that he had, stopping in to admire and usually going home with fresh picked produce. For a few years he sold corn and donated the money to Camp Easter Seal and Rotary.
Bill and Dorothy spent 14 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona, making friends and volunteering their time in the court and playing pool.
Although Bill had been in charge of some of the cooking at the fishing camps, he learned a lot more about cooking the last 22 years. Some of his specialties included beef jerky, hamburger jerky, salsa, homemade soups and stews. His friends and family enjoyed many gifts of food items to enjoy.
Bill decided he didn’t really need a vehicle so after selling his car, he purchased a few e-bikes and the last was a 3-wheel scooter. Bill and his dog Tupper cruised the streets, highways and Rotary Trail, crop checking and picking up the odd find on the road, or stopping to chat with walkers on the trail.
Bill is survived by his daughter Denise (Murray) Sundquist; son Dennis (Louise) Callbeck; step daughter-in-law Sheryl Edwards; grandchildren Brandon (Anna); Tyler (Soleil); Karina (Ole); David (Lindsay); Micheal (Kaila); Shana (George); Kristin (Darren); Shelley; Cory (Lynette); Blake (Chantal); great-grandchildren Cohen, Riley, Bostynn, Olive, Jaxton, Myla, Emily, Will, Tanner, Jace, Ava, Tess, Aiden, Logan, Sara, Janaya, and Madison. He is also survived by sisters Rose Ringrose, Laura Sweet and Margaret Callbeck; brothers Jake Chwelos, Lorne Callbeck, Jack Callbeck; many nieces and nephews and a host of good friends and neighbors.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Raymonde and Harold, step-father Dan, step-mother Martha, his wife Dorothy, step-son Norris, sister Nellie and brother Henry.
