Obituary
William George Muckler Sr.
“Big Muck”
It is with heavy hearts that the family of William George Muckler Sr., announce his passing on April, 21st, 2022, in Huntsville.
What do you say about a man who lived a full 90 years devoting his life to his family and community? You’d say things like, “he was larger than life”, “man of character”, “absolute legend”, “a man who treated people with respect”, and “one of the most genuine, caring, funniest guys out there”.
Bill or Big Muck (as he was affectionately called by everyone) was a devoted husband to Barbara (Gibson) and were in their 65th year of marriage. Loving father to Laurie (predeceased), Bill Jr. (Tracy) and Jamie. Grandfather to Lauren (Scott), Ben (Nicole) and Brodie. Great grandfather to Brooks, Dawson and Isla. Predeceased by his parents George and Rhoda and brother John. “Over the hill with a hell-of-a-noise, who should it be but the muckler boys”. Born in Midland, Ontario on September 5th, 1931, his family moved several times before settling in Paris, Ontario. This is where Big Muck became involved with his community joining the Masonic Lodge, coaching minor baseball and hockey as well as playing.
He was a project supervisor for the Ministry of Transportation which brought he and his family to Huntsville. They loaded up Laurie (15), Billie (12), Jamie (3 wks.), a dog and a cat. Bill retired after 38 years with the MTO and started his 2nd career, his true calling, at Deerhurst Highlands Golf Course. This is where he was happiest, meeting people from all over the world, even celebrities and not knowing it. His true colours would shine, picking on their terrible golf attire and suggesting they go into the Pro Shop to buy adequate golf wear. Calling “a spade, a spade” was Big Muck (which landed him in hot water more than once).
His true love was sports. Whether watching, playing or coaching he touched generations of kid’s hearts. He even came out of retirement in his 70’s to coach his grandson, Ben. He expressed over the years that his greatest highlights were coaching minor hockey, coaching and managing junior hockey in Huntsville, working the G8 and the Canadian’s Women’s Hockey Championship and travelling all over with his incredibly close buddy and son Jamie.
He will be incredibly missed.
“Skate hard, just don’t rip the jersey”.
“Say goodnight Dick”.
