WHITNEY, Doris Joyce “Betty”
Passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at her residence Knollcrest Lodge, Milverton. Betty passed away just 8 short days before her 98th birthday. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Betty moved to the Milverton area after she married the love of her life on September 15, 1951. Betty has since been a resident of Milverton and spent a short time living in Brunner before moving back to Milverton at Knollcrest.
Cherished mother of Ross Whitney (Marion Kane), Wayne Whitney (Joanne), Laurie Willits (Alan) and Sherry Whitney (Jeff McIntyre). Devoted grandmother of Jason Whitney, Joel Whitney, Greg Willits (Jeltsje), Lindsay Underwood (Jeremy), Mark Willits (LeeAnn), Jory Martin (Curtis), Shawn Willits (Reba), Brittany McCabe (Gavin), Jenna Magnan (Andre), Riley McCabe (Jade) and Carly McCabe (Joaquin). Very proud great grandmother of 7 great-grandchildren; Jackson, Cole, Kendal, Hank, James, Wells and Noah. Betty is survived by her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased and now reunited with her parents; George and Alice (Billings) Bell, her beloved husband Milburn Whitney, grandson Jay Whitney, brothers Robert, Ross and Roy and by sisters Grace Morrison and Margaret Hitchings.
Betty was a proud and active member of St. Paul’s United Church, Milverton and sang in the church choir for many years. She Volunteered her time at Knollcrest Lodge until the age of 90 and sat on the board of directors for Knollcrest. Betty was a member of the Knollcrest Auxiliary for many years. Betty enjoyed reading, watching TV, especially Jeopardy and knitting, up until losing her sight over the past 6 years. Betty loved to bake her most famous chocolate chip cookies which im sure many will remember and enjoyed. Betty loved to make perfect pastry and passed along her secret to her granddaughters.
Betty knit 429 pneumonia vests and 223 toques from 2011 to 2016 when her eyesight began to make knitting difficult. These items were distributed by Christian Aid Ministries to Eastern Europe, Africa, Central and South America and some Caribbean islands. Betty was very proud of this mission project and all that she created and contributed to it.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will take place at St. Pauls United Church, 39 Main Street South, Milverton, on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, from 1:00 until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Sonja Van De Hoef Fraser to officiate. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, where Betty will be laid to rest with her beloved Milburn.
As expressions of sympathy, donations will be accepted to St. Pauls United Church, Knollcrest Lodge or the CNIB and can be done through the funeral home.
