WELLMAN, Betty Olwen (Kew)
Betty Wellman of Springbrook, Ontario passed away peacefully in her home of 50 years after a short period of declining health, less than a month away from her 102nd birthday.
A resident of Rawdon Township for over eight decades, Betty was born in Winnipeg but spend most of her childhood in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, the eldest of five children of an English immigrant who fought for Canada in World War I and brought his Welsh war bride back to Canada with him after the war. In the late 1930’s, the family left Saskatchewan and moved to Ontario. During World War II, Betty worked at Deacon Bros. in Belleville. It was there a co-worker introduced her to Ralph Wellman, a young dairy farmer from Rawdon, who was born four days before Betty.
Betty and Ralph were married in 1941 and spent the next three decades on the Wellman family farm on the 12th Concession of Rawdon, raising three children. Ralph’s health issues in the early 1970’s led the couple to sell the family farm and move a few miles away to Springbrook. After 55 years of marriage, Ralph passed away in 1996, the year after their youngest son David had died.
Betty spent the last 25 years of her life in the family home in Springbrook, eventually joined there by her son Ray and daughter-in-law Doris. During those years, she took up painting water-colors as a hobby and was finally able to do some international travel to see her family roots in England and Wales, as well as, visit a branch of her family that had settled in Venezuela.
Betty was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, community member and friend to many. She was the rock of her family and we are all so blessed by how long she was able to spend on this earth with us. She is predeceased by her husband Ralph, son David and three younger siblings: Megan Elsey, Trevor Kew and Elwyn Kew. She is survived by her younger brother Ronald Kew of Cheshire, England, her children, Linda Bell (David) of Kingston and Ray Wellman (Doris) of Springbrook, her daughter-in-law Connie Wellman of Cloyne, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
There will be no funeral at this time and a graveside services will be held at a later date to be advised.
In leu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to Mount Nebo Cemetery in Springbrook, Stirling Food Bank or Heart of Hastings Hospice in Madoc.
