Obituary
Elizabeth Joan “Betty” (nee Bader) Matthews
Betty, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to meet the Lord on August 8, 2022. She passed away peacefully in hospice surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Larry, and by her sisters, Gloria, Donna, and Colleen. She is survived and honoured by her brother, Jack; her children: Denise (Arnie), Patty, Michelle, Jack (Jane), Polly (Kevin), Peter (Debbie), Nicky (Radar), and Greg (Bobbi Jo); her grandchildren: Leah (Mike), Matthew, Andrea (Andrew), Elizabeth, Edward, Brendan, Annie, Ashley, Jake, Delaney, Keisha (Nathan), and Brody (Diana); and her great grandchildren: Fletcher, Benjamin, Luke, Alice, Everly, Ophelia, Arianna, and Elena.
Betty was born in Vancouver on November 9, 1936 to Marjorie and Martin Bader. She married Larry in 1956 and together they raised eight children. In 1980, they moved to Calgary where they spent the next 22 years. Betty devoted herself to her family and to her Church community, particularly in support of the Sisters of the Precious Blood. In 2003, Larry and Betty moved to West Kelowna to be closer to many of their children and grandchildren.
Betty was the heart of her family and home and all were welcome in her house. Children were the light of her life. Betty generously lived a life of selfless love for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be inexpressibly missed and will continue to inspire us to love beyond measure, serve one another kindly, and be steadfast in faith.
Prayers will be held on Monday, August 15 at 6pm and the funeral mass will be on Tuesday, August 16 at 10am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2547 Hebert Road, West Kelowna BC with Fr. Rex Velmonte presiding. The funeral will be livestreamed at www.ololwestkelowna.com/.
Her family would like to express their deep gratitude to the many nurses and caregivers who cared for Betty in her last days, especially Ann, Melody, and Farzana, her palliative care nurses, the nurses and staff at Kelowna Hospice House, and most especially to her family physician, Dr. Linda O’Neill, for her compassionate and devoted care of their mother and grandmother. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Okanagan Hospice House.
Arrangements are in the care of Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium,
