Obituary
HARPUR, Elizabeth “Bette” Ruth (nee Walker)
Died suddenly, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on December 16, 2022 at the age of 76, of heart failure, while being treated for several underlying conditions.
Great friend and husband of Doug Harpur, she is survived by her three children, Pamela Miller (Neil), Naomi Miller (Tim), and Lisa Miller (Chris), her five grand children, Ryan, page, Ellis, Cedar, and Lawson. Bette was an elementary school teacher, with a career that started in Lennoxville, Quebec and included local schools in Stockdale, Campbellford and Warkworth. She was a behind-the-scenes force in many areas. She was a lifetime member of Girl Guides of Canada, and was instrumental in establishing guiding in Warkworth. She was a founding member of the Warkworth Curling Club, a member of the CMH Auxiliary and Warkworth Community Service Club, volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity and with the Food Bank, and was active in her church. She received special honours for many years of creating costumes with her friend Audrey Caryi for the annual Fair Parade, and she was sometimes to be found inside the Sandy the Squirrel Costume at the Maple Syrup Festival. Her legacy of involvement in her community is one of connection, service, and joy.
Bette travelled extensively and enjoyed trips to South Africa, Egypt, England, Ireland, Scotland, two tours through Europe, and several cruises in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. She enjoyed her local book club, and her Friday morning coffee clutch, where she was loved and respected by her many friends. Many will remember her fondly as a generous, caring, and happy soul.
Bette lived by the Guiding Law, and smiled and sang even under difficulty. Her difficulties included childhood anemia, being driven into clinical depression in the classroom, suffering from Addison’s Disease, winning two rounds of breast cancer, breaking her leg, and recently another anemia for which a root cause was never found. Through it all she continued to smile and sing, and hum a little tune to herself while she worked, continuing to show that happy congenial side that we all know as Bette.
A Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Anglican in Campbellford, on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11 AM. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations to Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation are welcomed.
