It is with a broken heart that I share the passing of our beloved mother. Bertha Gaudet (nee Phillips) passed away peacefully on June 20th after surviving numerous strokes over the past years. Bertha was born November 16, 1938 in Londonderry Mines Nova Scotia, eldest daughter of the late Stanley Onslow Phillips & Georgie Margarite (nee Barns). Bertha spent her young adult life in Toronto raising her girls. She returned home to Nova Scotia in the late 70’s to be closer to her family.
Bertha was the oldest of five girls, she is preceded by her husband Peter Gaston Gaudet of Arichat, daughter Karen Lynn Parker and her sisters Elizabeth Lane, Joan Westhaver and most recently her sister Shirley Bellefontaine. She is survived by her sister Rosa Turko (Doug), daughter Sonya Butler, her favorite son in law Timothy Butler of Mississauga, Ontario. Second mother to Simone Drinkwalter of Dryden Ontario & her 2 beautiful daughters Shanti & Fiona.
Our mom was the strongest woman I’ve ever met, she was always helping others in need and set a great example for us to give not receive. She wasn’t afraid of anyone or anything. She was a fierce Mama, she loved as hard as she laughed. She firmly believed in the power of prayer & that life was a blessed gift not to take for granted. Bertha was also a cancer survivor.
Bertha had a love for her community and volunteered for numerous charities such as the special Olympics, Election Campaigns/ voting polls, Brownies & Girl Guides. In her younger days she loved to Curl, Square Dance & Skating. Her house was always full of the neighborhood children who would add quarters into an (adoption) jar. She had a great love for crossword, Sudoku & Bingo.
Bertha will be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews & friends. We find comfort that she is now in the arms of her mother who she lost at the young age of 11.
The family would like to thank Victoria Parker her personal care worker for the past 3 plus years, we couldn’t have done this without you. Additional thanks to Christine Shudder & the 2nd floor friends & staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. A celebration will be held at a later date.
