Bertha Fillmore 1938 2022

It is with great sadness that we
announce the peaceful passing of Bertha Margaret
Fillmore (nee Smith) long-time resident of Sackville,
NB, on May 27, 2022 at the age of 84.
Bertha was born in Hunter River, PEI,
the youngest of 4 children and the only girl of parents Robert and
Bertha Smith. She was a proud graduate of Union Commercial College in
Charlottetown which led to her working at the Royal Bank, first in
Hunter River and then Ottawa where she met her husband of 61 years,
Richard Fillmore.
Bertha and Richard spent 37 years in
Montreal before moving to Richard’s hometown of Sackville in
1997. Bertha quickly integrated herself into her new community,
becoming a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church,
square dancing with the Tantramar Twirlers and joining the Sackville
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Bertha was very proud of the work of the
auxiliary and honoured to take on the role of President from 2002 to
2004, chairing the Request & Research Committee and receiving
her Life Membership Award in 2008.
Bertha loved spending summers at Hicks
Beach, enjoying a coffee on the deck with friends and occasionally
dozing in the afternoon sun. She was an avid gardener with an amazing
green thumb and kept Richard busy digging up flower beds while she did
the planting. She had a beautiful soprano voice, which she used to the
glory of God, singing in the choir and a flair for acting as witnessed
by many who saw her in the productions of Susanna and Jonah.
Bertha is survived by her husband
Richard Fillmore and her brother Clayton Smith (Jeanette, deceased).
She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Robert Smith and
Manson Smith (Rosemary) and her sister-in-law Ila Hicks
(Conrad).
Bertha is lovingly remembered by her
daughters Karen Fillmore-Convery (James) and Kim Maier (Mark) as well
as her grandchildren Erick Convery (Maryclare Taylor), Sarah Maier and
Emily Maier. She is also fondly remembered by her nephews and their
families.
Many thanks for the dedication and
empathy shown by all staff at the Drew Nursing Home, especially while
dealing with Covid.
Arrangements are under the care and
guidance of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge
Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). A time of visitation
will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 6-8
pm. A funeral service will take place at St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church, Sackville on Wednesday at 11 am with a reception
to follow. Interment will follow at the Hunter River
Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Prince Edward Island.
