Bert William Collier
1961-2022
So there comes a time in everyone’s life when someone must
speak up and let the world know that they are no longer here upon this
earth.
Bert William Collier aged 60 passed away, while in treatment
for cancer, at 04:10 am Thursday May 12 2022 at the Moncton Hospital
palliative care unit. Bert’s sister Joette was with him as he drifted
away to no longer be in such pain.
The nurses and Doctors at the Moncton Hospital deserve a big
hug for all their love and attention they showed Bert in his last few
weeks. They each one had something kind to say about the way he never
complained or bothered them and just was a model patient. Bert was a
stoic never letting others know the burdens he carried.
Bert was predeceased by his father Cerdic G Collier and his
Mother Glady M Collier, his two brothers Daryl and Danny and his
sister Janet. Bert is survived by his brothers Dennis Collier and Glen
Collier (Paulette) and his sisters Sharon Edgett (Alan), Beth Hale
(Dave), Colleen Collier (Annie MacDonald) and Joette Collier ( Bonnie
Hopper) Bert had so many nieces and nephews, Jamie, Jennifer, Chris,
Derek, Julie, Kim, Stephanie, Heather, Nicholas and Josh. He also has
a huge list of great and great great nieces and
nephews.
Bert grew up in Riverview New Brunswick and graduated from
Bernice McNaughton High School with honors. Bert worked at quite a few
vocations from Domac building supplies to a stint with the Hudson Bay
Company and finally working for Minacs call centers and then moving
onto Fairmount Hotels as a reservations and experience
consultant.
Family and friends know that his true love was carpentry and
all things related to home improvement. From restoring broken
discarded furniture and creating his own cabinets and shelving to
installing ceramic tile, wood floors and well just about anything he
wanted to do with is hands he could master it all. He was also a
wizard in the kitchen, deserts being his specialty, his chocolate
macaroons knew no equal and his pies were amazing.
Bert’s health declined in the past few years but he was
always there to install a floor or build a cabinet. His greatest joy
was spending time with his family members especially the children
teaching them crafts and making the most unusual paper airplanes. I
remember him “babysitting” his sister Beth and playing cards
and rummy while her husband worked the night shifts so many decades
ago.
Bert was a voracious reader and was very well read and he
could converse with anyone about anything. However Bert did not suffer
fools and his sarcasm and dry wit was legendary. If Bert liked you,
you knew it and if he did not well you just had to figure that one
out. He loved solitude and cats and British humor sharing must watch
shows with those of us who shared that passion.
Bert never wanted to be the center of attention or to be
fussed over. Bert would make and create things for people which was
his way of showing his love. He never said no to the women in his life
from sisters to nieces when they would ask him if he could fix, repair
or install something. A trait he inherited from his father Cerdic. He
loved Christmas time, baking with his sisters over the years and then
later with his nieces. He was so meticulous and fastidious he despised
clutter and loved a well ordered clean quiet space. Bert will be
missed and very well remembered and if anyone has a story or a photo
they wish to share then tack it on here.
I will start us off with a wee story. In 1979 Beth Bert and I
(Dave) drove to London Ontario in my 1977 Firebird Formula. I let Bert
drive so I could nap but I warned him to wake me before we hit the
Metro Boulevard in Montreal. Well Bert forgot and I woke to see Bert
white knuckled driving in the center lane cursing his head off. Bert
kept yelling “the speed limit is 30 miles an hour and these
idiots are doing 60”. Bert got us out of there in one piece and
refused to drive again on that trip. Life is way to short to not enjoy
doing the things you love, to spend time with people you love and to
create memories with the generations who follow. On that trip we took
my mothers station wagon to African Safari Land and Bert thought the
Ostrich walking towards the car was so amazing, and so yes he opened
his window. Only to be immediately pummeled by the Ostrich looking for
food, as we all sat laughing a the now terrified Bert and Ostrich both
trying to get away from each other.
Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place at
Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd.,
