Barbara GraceCain Saturday July 9th 2022

The family of Barbara Grace/Cain announce the passing of their mother and Nana on Saturday, July 9th, 2022.
Barbara was born in North Bay, Ontario on December 18, 1932 to Flora and Fred Smith. The family moved to Franklin Street in Fort William, and Barbara attended Isabella Street School, and Fort William Collegiate. Barbara went on to complete her nursing training at McKellar General Hospital where she was the editor of the Class of 1954 yearbook ‘Iridos’, and won the “Best Lips” category in the Ideal McKellar Nurse survey (she did have great lips!). Barbara made many lifelong friends during this happy time and was loyal to McKellar Hospital, working first as a pediatric nurse and eventually as the occupational health nurse for the hospital.
After retirement from her successful nursing career, Barbara turned her considerable talents to working in addiction & mental health. Barbara spent a year training at the Caron Center in Pennsylvania in the early 90’s before beginning a second career as a counselor at the St. Joseph’s Hospital Smith Clinic.
“Second” retirement allowed for travel to visit children and grandchildren, basking in sunny climes and other adventures.
Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband Larry Grace, her beloved daughter-in-law Bridget, and her dear sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Wayne Robinson.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Douglas Cain, and her five children, Michael Grace (Mary Lou Anctil), Maureen Grace (Robin Fyfe), Paul Grace (Isabel), John Grace (Patti) and Barb Luft (John). We were honoured to be raised by such an incredible woman. Barbara was blessed with ten kind and exceptional grandchildren, whom she cherished: Gavin, Adam and Neil Grace of Nelson, BC, Matthew and Frances Grace Fyfe of Ottawa, ON, Andrew Grace, of Peterborough ON, Sydney and Jake Grace of Barrie, ON, Peter and Jane Luft of Thunder Bay. She is also survived by niece Cherie Kok, and nephew Jeff Robinson and their families, all of whom had a special place in her heart.
Thank you seems insufficient for the outstanding care she received at Pioneer Ridge over the past year and a half, and at Chartwell prior to that. You are angels, all.
Cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate the life of Barbara Grace/Cain will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Ciaran Donnelly presiding. The inurnment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to Hospice Northwest would be appreciated.
