SMITH, Aubrey Wallace (November 20, 1935 – June 2, 2022) – It was St. George, New Brunswick’s loss when Faye (nee MacPherson) claimed Aubrey’s heart in 1955 and he moved to Cape Breton. Their adventures together lasted 65 years, until the time of Faye’s passing, just two years ago.
Aubrey and Faye spent the first few years together in Cape Breton before calling Eastern Passage home for 60 years. Aubrey quickly became a well-known member of his community. He volunteered for many years with the Eastern Passage Cow Bay Fire Department as Deputy Fire Chief. Aubrey was also a life-long member of Eastern Passage Buffalo Lodge 8686.
For 28 years, Aubrey enjoyed his career as Superintendent for the Department of Highways. He was known to be a fair and well-respected boss among his crew, never asking for more than he was willing to give. If you were a hard worker looking for an opportunity, Aubrey never hesitated to give you a chance.
Summer afternoons on a Friday saw his prized Lincoln Town Car heading to Riverland Campground with Faye by his side and their furry companion, Abby, looking forward to rides in the golf cart, aka The Gig. With his gentle manner and sharp wit, Aubrey was a friend to everyone at the campground. It was a familiar sight to see Aubrey sporting his Tilley hat taking a minute to share a smile or a story with a fellow camper. We can neither confirm nor deny that Aubrey may or may not have indulged in a glass or two of whiskey with friends while Faye played bingo. But, if it did happen, you can be sure it was Canadian Club.
Aubrey had already said goodbye to his parents, Leona (nee Doucett) and Henry Smith, along with his sisters, Marlene (Renis) and Gloria (Leonard), two brothers, Bill (Vera) and Reggie, and nephew Derek.
Blessed with the privilege to call Aubrey their Dad, are Leona (Kevin) Burke; Aubrey (Diane) Smith and Mary (Greg) MacLeod.
A shout of ‘Poppy’ or ‘Gramp’ from Teresa, Vanessa, Kylian, Kenzie, Sam, Cordel and Charlie always made Aubrey smile. Not only was Aubrey proud to announce he was a great-grandfather to Jake, he was quick to declare he achieved the elite rank of great-great grandfather to Charlie.
When Aubrey’s favorite niece, Michelle, called to check in, we hoped she could hear the smile we saw when Aubrey spoke with her.
Close friends are the family we choose. Lifetime friends Fred and Geraldine Skanes and Hector and Donna Murphy will surely reminisce with a smile of their times with Aubrey.
Though it is hard to say goodbye to someone who was loved so much and who gave so generously of his love and time to family and friends, we take comfort in knowing that his soul is at peace, finally being reunited with Faye. We can only imagine the struggle around who gets to talk first about what’s been happening the last couple of years!
In honor of Aubrey’s faithful friend and golf cart co-pilot, Abby, donations can be made to Hope for Wildlife.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Eastern Lodge Buffalo Club, 625 Cow Bay Road, on Saturday June 11, 2022. The family would love for you to join us any time between 1:00 to 4:00 pm to share your memories of Aubrey.
