Obituary of Arthur William Mayes
It is with great sadness that the family of Arthur William Mayes announce his sudden passing on December 12, 2022, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on May 10, 1945, in Fredericton, NB, he was the son of the late Annie Elizabeth (Paisley) and Roy Parker Mayes.
Art was a very patient, caring and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Rowena; daughters, Lisa and Krista; granddaughters, Sara Otis and Emma (Chris) Goldsmith; brother, John (Carol); nieces, Angela (Nicholas) and Julie; great-nephews, Tomas, Leopold, Louis, James and Noah; as well as many other cousins and extended family in NB and NL.
Art met the love of his life, Rowena (Crocker) in 1965 and married in 1967. His childhood home was in Queenstown, NB. After graduation from Vocational School, he worked for A.S. Emery where he found his passion for antique furniture. He completed his Cabinetmaking apprenticeship with Irving Shipbuilding and worked from the late 60s to the yard’s closure in 2000. Art continued his woodworking career with Clayton Woodworking until retirement in 2010. He was a member of the Carpenter and Joiner Union for more than 60 years.
He loved spending time in his shop restoring antique furniture, building clocks and other items. In his earlier years he enjoyed rebuilding motorcycles, building and playing banjos, taxidermy, CB radio, and fishing. He was always there to help family and friends. Art loved a great challenge and could repair most anything, earning him the title “Mr. Fix It”.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sarah Caines, Dr. James Michael, and Oncology staff for their exceptional care over this past year.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visitation on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, from 10:00 to 11:45 AM, with funeral service to follow at 12:30 PM. Interment will take place following the service at the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Route 102 in Queenstown, NB.
For those who wish, and in lieu of flowers, donations in Art’s memory can be made to the Anglican Parish of Gagetown: Please indicate either the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Fund (Queenstown NB) or St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Cemetery Fund (Queenstown NB) on the cheque memo.
