Arthur George Flieger Matheson, CStJ; July 25, 1949 – Sep 24, 2022
The family of George Matheson is sad to announce his passing at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 73.
George was born in Newcastle, NB, the son of the late James and Marguerite Matheson. George was employed at NBTel beginning in 1967 until his retirement, though his career was cut short in 1984 by a motor vehicle accident which left him a quadriplegic. With many challenges over the years George’s incredible strength and honorable character remained steadfast and he continued to be an active community volunteer, family man, and friend to many.
An avid sports fan and outdoorsman in his younger years, George enjoyed playing many sports including hockey, football, softball, curling and bowling. George later shared his love of sports with his children, coaching novice hockey and travelling to watch his kids play basketball, soccer, hockey, field hockey and whatever other sports they could drag him to. George’s love of the outdoors included many fishing and hunting trips over the years, some of which have stories that can only be described as legends.
George was an avid community volunteer. He enjoyed a lengthy tenure of service with the St John Ambulance, being vested as a Brother of the Order in 1979 and ultimately invested as a Commander of the Order of St John in 2008. He was awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee medal in 2002 in recognition of his service. George was a steadfast first aider and following his accident he continued his life of service by passing on his knowledge as a First Aid Instructor and Officer with the local St John Ambulance Brigade and as a member of the Provincial Council. He was a proud member of the NBTel Telephone Pioneers and served a term as the President of the New Brunswick Chapter.
George was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Barbara, his sister Helen, brother in laws Ed Perkins and Bill Hogan, sister-in-law Pauline Mullin and niece Heather Hogan.
He leaves behind his beloved family: Jennifer (Ed), Quispamsis; Tanya, Miramichi; Colin (Stephanie), Woodstock; brother: James (Joyce), sister-in-law: Norine Hogan, brother-in-law Bernard Mullin, all of Miramichi, as well as several nieces and nephews. George was a proud grandfather to Aiden and Austen, Woodstock, and James, Michael and Emily, Quispamsis.
The family would like to thank Donna Peters, the Nurses, and Therapists from the NB Extra Mural Program for their exemplary care and compassion over the years, as well as the staff of the Miramichi Regional Hospital CCU.
The family will receive visitors at Bell’s Funeral Home, on Thursday, September 29, 2022, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, Chatham Head on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 11 AM with Father John Beaumaster officiating. Internment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the NB Extra Mural or to the Stan Cassidy Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
