ARTHUR (ART) MIDDLESTEAD
November 5, 1926 – March 23, 2022
After a valiant battle, Art left behind his burdens on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at the Concordia Hospital at the age of 95 years.
Remaining to cherish his memory are son, Blake, granddaughter Courtney, sister Frieda Klapprat, brothers George (Sharon) and Richard (Bernice) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Art was predeceased by parents Fred and Johanna, loving wife Claire, daughter in law Rose, brother Walter and sisters Edna Fuerst, Myrtle Hladun and Martha (Suzy) Balness.
Art was born at the family homestead on November 5, 1926 the third child of Fred and Johanna. Life on the farm was hard as there was always work to do but there was a large family to spread the load. Art went to the Carn Ridge School which was a two mile walk away from the homestead. The highlight of the school year was the picnic with ice cream, games and, after going home to do chores, a dance.
After graduating from school, Art left the farm to work in Winnipeg. It was there, in 1948 that he met his soon to be wife, Claire Jourdain. The pair married in 1952 and a few years later they welcomed their son Blake. Around this time Art started working for the Department of National Defense, retiring from there after more than 30 years. The family moved into their home in the Garden City area where they hosted family get togethers filled with food, laughter, and camaraderie. In addition to the house in Winnipeg, Art and Claire purchased property in Moosehorn, Manitoba near where he was raised. Art was never happier than he was at Moosehorn, in the middle of God’s country. He always said that talking to God was a local call there, it wasn’t long distance. Art remained an avid outdoorsman. From his fishing trips to the annual hunting trip each year with his crew of brothers, brother in laws, son and nephews, he loved spending time on the land.
Eventually the house in Winnipeg was sold and Art and Claire moved into an apartment suite close to where son Blake and his family, which now included the light of Art’s life, Courtney. Summers were still spent in Moosehorn but now they were sweeter because Courtney was with them. After the Moosehorn property was sold, Art and Claire enjoyed monthly trips to the United States as well as spending time with family.
After the devastating loss of his beloved wife in 2008, Art moved in with his son Blake. Although no longer travelling to the United States, Art still enjoyed his trips to local casino’s as much for the drive in the countryside as the actual activity.
He suffered medical setbacks over the last few years before succumbing to them on March 23, 2022. He will be remembered for the glint in his eyes and his sense of humor and dedication to family.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death.
When I soar to world’s unknown,
See thee on Thy Judgement Throne.
Rock of Ages, Cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in thee.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Arthur Alfred Middlestead November 5 1926 March 23 2022..
