It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tony Gerrits of Brights Grove, at the age of 81. Tony transitioned from this life surrounded by his family, at Bluewater Health on July 6th, after a short but fierce battle with a rare leukemia. Tony is survived by his cherished wife of 37 years, Merla; his children Lynne Gerrits, Christine (Perry) Persichetti, Paul (Pam) Gerrits and his stepdaughter Michelle (Alex) MacCuaig. Tony will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends who all held a special place in his heart. Tony was born “Antonius Arnoldus Johannes” to Martin and Gertrude Gerrits in 1941 in Rijkevoort, Nord Brabant, The Netherlands. The youngest boy and one of eight children, Tony celebrated his 6th birthday on the ship when his family immigrated to Canada. Tony is survived by his sisters Joanne DeGurse, Mary DeGurse, Gertie (Bob) Martin and brother John (Henriette) Gerrits. Predeceased by brothers Gerry (Jean) Gerrits, Bill Gerrits, sister Geraldine (Bob) Crombeen and brother in laws Tom DeGurse and Joe DeGurse. Tony was a very proud member of Local 663 since 1976. He valued his union brothers and truly enjoyed his career as a pipefitter. Tony inspired and supported both his son and grandson to follow in his footsteps and join the 663. He was also a long serving member of Huron Shores Optimist club and functioned as president during 1991/92. Tony enjoyed life with his beloved Merla to the fullest and always had an open door for family and friends to pop over. He was known for his infectious smile that warmed the hearts of everyone around. Friends, family, and neighbors all knew Tony well, as he was the first to lend a hand and left a lasting memory on one and all. He was a great presence in every room he entered, and folks naturally migrated towards him and his incredible charm. Tony was a prankster from a very young age and would take great lengths to pull off a good prank. If the prank backfired it was an even funnier story for him to tell. Tony also loved playing cards, games, telling a good joke and was quick to display that dazzling smile. His sense of humor, good nature and quick wit will be sadly missed by all. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2022, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Camlachie Community Center, 6767 Camlachie Road. All are welcome to attend this opportunity to share stories, memories and gratitude for a life well lived, and to raise a glass in memory of Tony. Special thanks to the numerous friends, family and neighbours who have helped tremendously during this difficult time. Donations to the St. Joseph’s Hospice, or Heart and Stoke Foundation (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
