Obituary
It is with deepest regret that our family announce the death of Anthony (Tony) Byrtus, at Athabasca Extendicare on the morning of January 16th, 2022, at the age of 90.
Tony was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary and younger sister Ann. Tony is lovingly remembered by his sister Martha Bishop, niece Lisa Bishop and nephew Clete (Darlene) Pare.
Tony was born on August 14th, 1931 in Athabasca, residing in the area north of Athabasca till the late 40’s. The family then moved to the newly purchased farm located west of Athabasca. Tony resided on the same farm for much of his life farming with his father George.
During his younger years he spent winters running dozer at numerous sites all over northern Alberta. However, he greatly enjoyed his trips to the Northwest Territories for work. One of his fondest times was spent in the high arctic on Ellef Ringas Island for Panarctic Oil, operating a dozer building airstrips in the early 1970’s.
Tony’s lifelong occupation was being a farmer on the land he and his father broke during the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. He raised cereal crops, canola and cattle and truly enjoyed the cattle business.
He retired in the early 2000’s and started taking longer well-earned trips away from home with friends, destinations included Hawaii, Cuba and even up the Alaska highway were some of his favorite trips.
As per Tony’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a small private graveside funeral will take place this upcoming summer for close friends and family.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at Athabasca Extendicare and Dr. Michael Burger for the exemplary care they provided Tony these last few years. We are truly grateful for your efforts.
In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made online to charity of one’s choice or to Tony’s favorite, the World Wildlife Fund.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Anthony Byrtus August 14 1931 January 16 2022 (age 90)..
