Obituary
Ann left us on August 4, 2022. Ann Dorothy Carlson (Herbig) was born August 2, 1938 and grew up on the family’s cattle ranch near Lundbreck, Alberta. She shared so many childhood memories of her time fishing in Rock Creek, endless ranch chores, riding her pony Sea Biscuit and adventures involving every kind of mountain critter you can imagine. Always in tow was her beloved Jenny, who began her love for cats and all animals. She always held the ranch and the foothills close to her heart.
After graduating from Lundbreck High School she ventured to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta to complete her teaching certification. It was during her first teaching assignment in Champion, Alberta that she met her husband, Gordon Carlson. They married in 1961 and moved to the Carlson farm on the Coal Mine Road east of Champion. Ann continued teaching in Vulcan at Hazel Cameron Elementary until 1965. Up until just weeks before her passing she would run into past students who shared stories with her about the impact her teaching had on their lives, her love for the profession shone through these stories. She returned to teaching in 1989 and continued until 1997.
Her career change from teacher to full-time mother in 1965 meant a new home at the farm and the arrival of Gordon and Ann’s first child, Graeme. The family continued to grow when she welcomed Garth in 1968 but who sadly passed away just two years later. Lorna completed the family in 1971.
Gordon and Ann were involved in many community activities. For twenty-two years, Gordon and Ann would hire international students through the International Agricultural Exchange Association (IAEA). Ann was a second mom to many of these young men and women from Europe, United Kingdom and Australia and she supported Gordon to become an important part of IAEA, serving as Canadian President and making several trips to Europe during this time with the association. Locally, Ann was involved in Champion UCW, Amity Club and a parent volunteer through 4-H, Girl Guides and hockey. She shared her extraordinary baking talents at many community events, made thousands of butter tarts with Lorna for friends at Christmas and amassed an enviable cookbook collection while perfecting her skills. More recently she was involved with the Champion Pioneer Club, Vulcan Historical Museum and Vulcan Extendicare Auxiliary.
Gordon and Ann retired from active farming in 2000 and ranching in 2005. As things slowed down, they took the time to do many of the things they talked about for so many years. They traveled nearby and abroad and spent countless hours with their granddaughter Kaylin. Ann lost Gordon in 2007. She remained on the farm for 5 more years before moving to Vulcan and creating a lovely home filled with the antiques she and Gordon had acquired throughout the years. She spent those final years volunteering, baking, knitting and travelling with her kids on various adventures from Savanah to Seattle, Vancouver to Fredericton and time with her daughter in Houston.
Ann is survived by her daughter-in-law Tammy Carlson and granddaughter Kaylin; her daughter Lorna Carlson and son-in-law Lloyd Good; her sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Gordon Keeley and nephews Kent and Dana (Cheryl) Karapita. Ann was predeceased by her infant son Garth, her husband Gordon and just recently her son Graeme.
A service and luncheon will be held at 11:00pm Thursday, August 25th, 2022 at the Vulcan United Church with Rev. Sue MacDonald presiding. A private interment will be held at a later date. Please, in lieu of flowers the family would ask that donations be made to the Vulcan County Health and Wellness Foundation www.vchwfoundation.com/ in recognition of the outstanding work by the medical and support staff providing Ann the best and most compassionate of care these last three years.
