Anica Starcevic 2022

Anica Starcevic
1930 – 2022
Anica (also known as Anne) is predeceased by her beloved husband, Milan and is survived by her daughters, Mary (Zvonko) Juric, Dianne Starcevic; her grandchildren, Jasen, Amanda, Thomas and Victoria, and her brother, Mile (Marija) who resides in Zagreb, Croatia. Anica was born in Budak, Croatia in 1930. She was the eldest child to her parents, Matilda and Tome Susic. As a young teenager, she moved to Zagreb to reside with her mother while her father worked in Canada and the US. She had many friends in Zagreb and had many fond memories of her friendships and activities. After finishing her schooling, she secured an administrative role Nikola Tesla in Zagreb. She held this position for several years.
In 1957, she came to Canada to visit her paternal uncle in Toronto with the intention of immigrating to Canada. As fate would have it, she met her husband Milan shortly after she arrived in Toronto. They courted and were married in 1958. In the early years of their marriage, our mother worked at Imperial Optical, Christie Breads, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Eventually, our parents settled in Port Colborne where our father secured a full-time job as a carpenter with INCO. For the next forty years, our parents resided in Port Colborne where they raised their two daughters.
Our mother was a traditional homemaker. She took pride in her home, brought up her two daughters. She always made sure everyone was well fed and looked after. She mastered a repertoire of Christmas cookies, palacinka (crepes), and made an amazing apple pie. She was very proud of her Croatian culture and supported our father’s community activities. They frequented Croatian dances, summer picnics, cultural events and all things Croatian. She was a proud Baba who always made sure that her grandchildren had a regular supply of her baking. She never visited her grandchildren without a bundt cake, an apple pie or Tim Horton donuts. She took pride in her grandchildren’s academic, athletic and career achievements and always made sure that they wore their slippers inside the house!!
Over the years, our mother maintained long standing relationships with her friends, family and Kumove wherever she resided. In 2001, our parents moved to Georgetown to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. The passing of our father in April 2021 left a big void in our mother’s heart and her day to day life. We would like to acknowledge the support and attentive care that the staff of Bennett Centre have provided to our mother.
We know that our mother and father are together again and that our father will attend to and look after our mother the way he did throughout their marriage. We have been blessed to have our mother and Baba well into her 91st year.
Draga Mama and Baba- we will love you and you will always be in our hearts. Pochiviu u miru.
