Angus, beloved husband of Rachel (nee Johnson), died peacefully in Nelson BC Canada at age 90 after a brief illness. Loving father of Cameron (Patricia Walsh-Paton) of Calgary Alberta and Kathryn (Kevin Lang) of Yellowknife Northwest Territories. Brother-in-law to Lyvonne & Chester DeBruin of Kaslo BC. Dear Grandpa to grandsons Mackenzie (Wynona Dumas), Wyatt, Dexter, and Jerome. Great-grandfather, Step-grandfather, Uncle, and wonderful friend to many across Canada, but especially his adopted hometowns of Calgary, AB and Nelson, BC.
Angus was born in a stone cottage “Millden of Stracathro” in Angus County of Scotland, as the only child of parents Archibald Coull Paton of Ferryden and Alice Ruxton of Brechin. Archie and Alice were purveyors of fruits and vegetables in Ferryden and nearby Montrose.
After graduating from the Montrose Academy, Angus began his professional career at the Royal Bank of Scotland. He served with the British Armed Forces during the Korean war. In June of 1956, he emigrated to Montreal Canada.
Angus covered much ground in Canada, managing branches for the Royal Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal in Alberta (Red Deer, Lethbridge, Edmonton, Calgary), and British Columbia (Kaslo and Fort Nelson) and Northwest Territories (Yellowknife and Hay River, flying across the arctic), and most notably the Private Banking Centre in Calgary. Angus retired with Rachel to Kaslo BC after a long and successful career from age 16 to 66.
Angus loved music (singing, playing piano and tuba), and teaching his bridge club (he taught bridge lessons up to the current year), and his garden. He was also a member of Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge.
The Paton family extends a very special thank you to neighbours who provided tremendous support to Angus and Rachel over recent years, to life-long family friends the Croskery family, and to the friendship of his bridge club members at Learning and Retirement at Selkirk College and Taghum Hall.
The family also wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Kootenay Lake Hospital for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation (klhf.org/wp/), then raise a dram to Angus who was forever the life of the party. “We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine, but seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.” – Robert Burns
