Obituary
Angus James MacDonald
Sydney Mines
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Angus James MacDonald, our beloved grandfather, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH), Sydney.
Angus was born on April 8, 1945 to parents Mary (Daly) and John McDonald of Atlantic St., Sydney Mines. He is survived by his three daughters – Tanya (Jim) MacDonald, Laura MacDonald, and Cheryl (Tim) Astle, and his two granddaughters, Rebecca and Erica, to whom he was known as Papa Angus, and with whom he loved to play checkers.
He is also survived by his siblings, Andrew, Irene Polkowski, Christina (Paul) Brown, John (Nathalie), Leonard, Michael (Dee), and Marian (Tom) Turner, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Angus was predeceased by his older sisters Marguerite Grant and Doris McDonald, and his baby sisters in infancy, Lorraine and Mary.
Throughout his lifetime, Angus held many different jobs, including working on the lake boats, for the Canadian National Railway, and the oilsands in Fort McMurray. In 1974, he married Margaret Lomond, and some years later they moved to Notre-Dame, New Brunswick, an Acadian community where they raised their daughters to be bilingual, which is something that he was always very proud of.
Angus was the life of the party, and although he didn’t play any instruments, he loved music. Elvis, The Beatles, The Golden Oldies of Rock ‘n Roll, Country-Western classics, and traditional Celtic music were among his favourites tunes. He even wrote a few songs. He loved to sing and dance. Family and friends will recall some of his much-loved dance moves such as the puppet dance, and would always request that he perform his heartfelt dance solo of Sammy Davis Jr.’s Mr. Bojangles.
Angus loved story-telling, whether it was by writing poetry, telling jokes, doing impressions, or performing recitations. He was always up for an adventure, and loved recounting the tales. He was curious about history, nature, and the arts, and enjoyed reading about many different topics. He also had many hobbies. He was an avid painter, he loved playing cards, and was known for sharing his delicious baked goods. Home-made bread was his specialty.
Da always cheered for the underdog in sports, and in life. He liked to see those with the odds stacked against them come out on top. He taught us compassion, to appreciate the little things in life, and if we felt so inclined, to “go for it”. We are grateful for all the moments we shared, and the memories that we made.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the nurses and doctors of CBRH’s Coronary Care Unit and Palliative Care Unit. Memorial donations may be made to the CBRH Foundation:
