Obituary
Alphonsus “Phonse” Stewart, aged 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, November 7th, 2022 at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital.
Dad loved the outdoors. He loved hunting and camping in his younger years, and was always ready to go catch a fish no matter what time of the year it was. He would always share his stories of his catch of the season, to whomever would listen, and would make the fish larger each time the story was told. He fancied a game of cards with friends and family, and cheated every single hand he could. Everyone was always welcome to stop in for a visit with Dad and he would always tell you “there’s lots of time sure, it’s only early yet” when you were getting ready to leave. Dad had a knack for Newfie music and would even whip out his accordion and guitar every now and then for a song. He always got a kick out of telling a joke or pulling a prank, and would fill his belly laughing when he got a rise from others. He was a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He had a great love for his family, who will miss him every day.
He leaves to mourn: his sons: Carl (Janet) and Glenn; his daughters: Debbie (Andy), Sandra (Paul), Elaine (Ivan), and Yvonne (Billy); his grandchildren: Troy, Carl Jr (Rina), Jonathan, Kayla (Tommee), Alyssa (Michael), Kimberly (Scott), Jack, and Jalyn; his great-grandchildren: Carina, Dawson, and Leyton; his sisters: Josephine and Dora (Gerry); brothers-in-law Waldo, and Patrick (Marie); and special niece Claudine (Ron); as well as a large circle of relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Phonse was predeceased by: his wife Rose; his beloved companion Chico; his parents Mary-Agnus and Felix; mother and father in-law Margaret Ellen and Archibald Moores; brothers: Michael, Gordon (Carmel), and Patrick; sisters: Elizabeth (John), Rita, Laura-Mae, and Gertrude (Roy); brother in law Patrick; and loved relatives gone but not forgotten.
Special thanks to his workers, who were more like his family, Lori Alexander, Sandra Chaffey, and Dawn Catlett and his donut delivery gal Sabrina Humber.
Thank you to Dr. Dwyer, Dr. Patterson, Dr. Lewis and all the nursing staff who cared for Poppy Phonse (Fonz) over this last year.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, November 10th 7:00-9:00 PM from Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 11th at 1:30 PM from St. Stephen’s Parish. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Phonse’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army Church, Stephenville, Janeway Children’s Hospital, or to a charity of one’s choice.
“If others wonder why I’m missing’, just tell ‘em I’ve gone fishing”
Born and raised, that was me, a Newfoundlander, proud to be.
In life I shared my love and glories, but now I’m gone, think back to stories.
When you feel the coastal air, just close your eyes because I am there.
I’m in the breeze for you to feel, and in your heart to help you heal.
Remember me and time we shared, I thank you all who loved and cared.
