Alice Effie (Corkum) Walker
1920-2022
It is with comfort and
the knowledge that Mom’s end of life was peaceful, that we
share the news of her passing on Monday, February 21,
2022.
Alice Effie (Corkum)
Walker was born on February 27, 1920, in her grandmother’s
home in East Chester. She was the eldest daughter of Clifford and
Helena (Dauphinee) Corkum.
She attended the
Provincial Normal College in Truro and began her teaching career on
Ironbound Island with five students. She taught for twenty-three years
in Lunenburg and Kings Counties, retiring from Aldershot Elementary in
1981. She often spoke fondly of the many friends she made with staff,
parents and students. She gave of her time and talents to almost every
board and committee at Kentville United Baptist Church where she is
remembered for her dedication, exceptional programmes, organizational
skills and prayers. She was particularly pleased to be a founding
member of the Friends of Bereavement Group at Kentville Baptist and
instituting inter-denominational weekly church services at Wedgewood
House. She also volunteered at Kings Historical Society, Kingswood
Camp and Home and School. With her husband, family and friends, she
enjoyed camping, cottage life and travelling across Canada, United
States, Bermuda and Europe. Mom (Nanny) was a very talented lady and
enjoyed embroidery, counted cross stitch, crocheting, knitting and
smocking. We girls especially remember all the beautiful dresses and
sweaters that she made for us while we were growing up. We were always
so happy to wear Mom’s wonderful creations! Her quality of
life diminished significantly after the passing of her beloved
husband, Guy. She exhibited great strength of character as in later
life she lost both her sight and hearing.
Alice is survived by
daughters, Sharon (Steve) Hawboldt, Belleisle, Annapolis County and
Cheryl (Terry) Webber, Edmonton, Alberta; her most cherished
granddaughter, Amy (Christoph) Deutschmann, Edmonton, Alberta and two
special great-grandchildren, Lewis and Adele, Edmonton, Alberta. She
was predeceased by sisters, Florence (Stirling) Cook, Marion (Ernest)
Rennehan, Flora (Arnold) Hiltz, Averil (Norman) Eisner, Viola Mae
(Allan) Bremner and brother, Allan Corkum. She is also survived by
brother, Ted (Linda) Corkum, sister-in-law, Marjorie Corkum; and many
nieces and nephews. Her greatest joys were in her service to God, her
love for her family, friends and the accomplishments of all her former
students. We would like to express our deepest appreciation and
gratitude to Michael and Yiwen Walsh, all the staff of Wedgewood House
where Mom resided for the past six- and one-half years and the staff
of Medical B Unit at the Valley Regional Hospital for their kindness
and compassion to Mom.
