Alfretta’s Obituary
MORSE, Alfretta B. – age 84, of Berwick, Kings Co., passed peacefully and courageously at home on Thursday, March 17, 2022, surrounded by family. Born on November 6, 1937, youngest daughter of the late Cecil and Vera (Spinney) Palmer. Survived by daughters, Heather (Steve Philpott), Ottawa; Sheila (Tim Atwater), Berwick; Dianna, Berwick; and son, Anthony (Linda), Berwick; grandchildren, Emily and Oliver Morse Maddox and their father, Sean Maddox; Brett and Lacey Mckenzie; Patrice, Joshua, Jonathan, and Sarah Rheaume; Logan (Hale) and Mallory; nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Joyce MacInnis, Hantsport; many nieces and nephews, and furry companion, Ellie. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Lawrence; her brother, Gerald. Born and raised in Nicholsville, Alfretta worked as a telephone operator for five years, first in Aylesford, then in Berwick. Shortly after marriage, Alfretta’s sense of purpose and adventurous spirit led her to complete a hairdressing course in Halifax. Upon obtaining her professional license, she began and ran a successful beauty shop business in her home in Berwick, while juggling the demands and joys of raising four children. She loved traveling and ventured to many parts of Canada, the United States, and Africa. Skilled at crochet and knitting, her many hats, sweaters, mittens, and afghans live on in the homes of her children and loved ones. She was equally adored for her cookies, muffins, and bread, especially by her many grandchildren. She kept her mind sharp and enjoyed word puzzles and picture puzzles and was an avid reader of fiction. Her well-tended rose and rhododendron bushes, tangled garden and plentiful indoor plants reflected her love of flora and fauna. In addition, she loved the family farm, particularly during strawberry season, checking the fields, picking a box or two every day for shortcake or jam. She also kept watch over the cattle and was often the first to see a newborn calf. She loved the ocean and could sit for hours listening to the surf; she learned to swim as an adult and was not afraid of trying new things. In her later years people in Berwick could set their watches to Alfretta’s daily walks, whatever the weather. She was a strong, devoted, and loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is remembered by old and young as a positive role model with a huge impact on all who encountered her. She will be remembered for her love, strength, courage, practical outlook on life, and dry sense of humour. Cremation has taken place; a graveside service will take place at a later date at the Berwick Cemetery, Main Street, Berwick. Donations may be made to the “Carey Me” Fund – Supporting Palliative Care in the Home, Victorian Order of Nurses – Annapolis Valley Branch, Canadian Red Cross Society or Canadian Cancer Society.
