Alexander John Sloman
Alex passed suddenly and painlessly at home on December 19, 2021, taken too young by an unforeseen brain aneurysm at the age of 47.
He is survived by his wife Lynn and his children Madeleine and Jack.
Born to Jane Anne (nee Barrett) & David Sloman at Toronto’s Grace Hospital on November 24th 1974, Alex moved briefly to Somerset with his parents, igniting a lifelong affinity for his ancestral roots and a dry English wit. He and his family returned to Canada and finally settled in Newmarket in 1981, where Alex remained his entire life but for a brief stretch in the heart of Toronto and King City.
Predeceased by his father, Alex remained very close with his dearest mother, enjoying weekly dinners, cut throat scrabble matches and countless days poolside. Anne was a companion with Alex and family on trips back to England to visit the family with whom he shared a sharp sense of humour and a deep and loving bond.
Alex was an only child, though the absence of siblings allowed him to collect a motley assortment of strays who became his chosen family. Alex’s menagerie of miscreants and mischief-makers included camping companions, beer buddies, bandmates, poker pals, and all manner of kindred spirits with whom he shared his joy for life and bottomless appetites.
Though he downplayed the importance of his degree, Alex was nonetheless a University graduate, and was proud to have started a successful web design business. His professionalism and expertise were always in demand and appreciated by many of his field’s top firms.
In September of 1993 Alex’s enthusiastically relaxed approach to education led him to the wrong night school and ultimately to Lynn McIntyre, the love of his life. Constant companions, soulmates, and fiercely loyal partners, Lynn and Alex shared a love that was the envy of everyone lucky enough to witness its glow. Lynn’s parents Clair and Jane McIntyre loved Alex as one of their own, and Lynn’s brother Mark became the same to Alex, as well as a lifelong friend.
When not acting as his family’s proud personal chef, pack-mule and hiking guide, Alex shared with them an affinity for horror movies, video games, and a firm belief that rules and instructions are suggestions and should often be ignored. He was both a cabin keeper and a mountain climber, always saying yes! to new adventures but forever returning home to where his heart was.
Home to the legacy of Lynn and Alex’s love – Madeleine and Jack. The apples of his eye, the springs in his steps, the cups of water in his half-marathon.
Like his thunderous drumming, Alex’s perpetual happiness provided a backbeat to the lives of those around him. He never stopped working on improving himself, and he had a knack for making people feel better about themselves. It’s a fitting testament to Alex that so many claim him as their best friend.
A celebration of his life will occur in the summer of 2022, at a time and place to be determined.
Block off June through October, just to be safe.
