Alexander, Elizabeth “Betty” Louise
Elizabeth “Betty” Alexander passed away quietly at Errinrung Long Term Care Home in Thornbury on Monday December 19, 2022 at the age of 77.
Born in Nanaimo, B.C., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Nancy (Sheringham) Clarke and sister of the late Shirley (Clarke) Hill. Betty was the beloved wife of David Alexander, the cherished mother of Michelle, Jennifer and Dianne, and the adored grandmother “Granny” of Bridget, Megan, Isabella, Cooper, Lola, Ryan and Sabrina.
Betty was loved by everyone she met. Her smile would light up the room, and her love and kindness for all people was ever-present. Betty and David had many friends and hosted wonderful parties, including an annual Wimbledon party to watch the final match, complete with strawberries and cream. Betty enjoyed music and dancing, and her Mick Jagger dance imitation was legendary. She loved playing tennis, skiing and boating, and was an incredible cook. She cared about the world around her, was socially conscious and stood up for what she believed in.
Betty was also a brilliant person who excelled in academics and, as a teenager, represented her home town in a televised “Reach for the Top” competition. Soon after marriage, she focused her attention full-time on raising her three daughters, surrounding them in love and support, encouraging them to follow their dreams. Later in life, cheered on by her family, Betty returned to school to complete a Bachelors Degree at the University of Toronto in Computer Science, leading to a successful career in the health care sector.
Betty and her family loved spending time together, whether boating in Georgian Bay, skiing in Banff or enjoying all the every day moments of laughter, love, family and friendship which make up a beautiful life. In retirement, their home in Collingwood was the gathering place for the whole family, and Betty spent endless hours drawing and colouring, laughing and chatting with her adoring grandchildren.
Betty was truly beautiful, inside and out, and made such a positive contribution to the world, always focusing on helping others; always so generous with her time and spirit. This world has lost one of its best.
