Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother- Agnes “Aggie” Marie McHugh (nee Barker) on June 28,2022, in Quispamsis, NB. Aggie was born January 21,1934 – a daughter for Robert and Nellie Barker of Windsor, NL. She grew up in Windsor and was quite proud of her high school completion which was a rare feat in those days.
She started working at the Brown Derby Restaurant where she met a customer named Ed McHugh (Sr.). He invited her to a movie for their first date where he insisted that she pay for her own ticket! She did (which is very surprising) and eventually married him in 1956 moving into a brand-new home they had built in Grand Falls, NL before their marriage.
They had two children along way – Edward (Jr.) and Joanne. Aggie worked for CN Railway for a number of years which she enjoyed. In the mid seventies they moved to Quispamsis, NB because of hubby’s work. She loved it there but travelled back to Newfoundland whenever she had a chance. After Ed’s retirement, many lovely winters were spent in Zephyrhills, Florida where they were well known for their hospitality, dancing, singing and her playing the Newfie spoons to many tunes! Aggie loved to bake and cook and many were beneficiaries of her creations. Her ‘chippy dippy’ cookies were legendary! She was an avid sewer and knitter for many years. She handwrote many of her recipes into a book which is now a family treasure. Unfortunately, Nanny’s kitchen is now closed. There will be no more delicious turkey dinners with Newfie salt meat finished with blueberry pudding topped with a ‘strong’ rum sauce.
She is now reunited with her partner of 65 years and they are dancing to “Look At Us” and “When I Grow Too Old to Dream”.
We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of the Kings Way Care Centre who gave Aggie wonderful care during the past two+ years during a very tough period of time.
She is survived by children Ed Jr. (Shelly) Bedford, NS and Joanne Cornfield (Grant) Hampton, NB, siblings Gerald Barker in Oromocto, NB and Louise Davis in Deer Lake, NL, grandchildren Jocelyn (Christopher), Kate (Alistair), Colin (Leslie) and Christine (Nathan), great grandchildren Cole, Quinn, Ace and Mac along with numerous relatives from the McHugh and Barker families and many friends. She was predeceased by Ed Sr., her parents, siblings William, Lawrence, Jack, Rita, Mary (Mame), Robert and Elizabeth.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A Celebration of her Life will be held at 4pm on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel in Saint John, NB with visitation from 2-4 just prior that same day. Donations are not necessary, but if you feel inclined, please consider donating to an Alzheimer Society anywhere in Canada.
A life well lived. Rest well ‘Mudder’/Aggie/Nanny. You are already missed.
