HAMILTON, Stewart –
Loving Husband of 35 wonderful years, L.O.M.L. and, Best Friend of Martha Becke Hamilton. Father of Andrew (Angela), Mary Sawyer (Shaun), Sarah, Adam, and Ian. Grandfather to baby Oliver Sawyer. Loving son to Anne (Archie) McLay and predeceased by father William Hamilton. Dear brother to John (Birgit) and Jim (Marlene), and favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Stewart Hamilton was loved by all. On Thursday March 31st 2022 Stew left this world peacefully in his sleep to be with God. At the young age of 59 it was sudden for the family, but Stew’s compassion and humour in life assured that, at his passing, his family was well taken care of by all of his relatives and friends. His family has felt the outpouring of love and affection for Stew from all family, friends, and parish.
Born in Scotland, Stew’s early years were filled with an abundance of outdoor play and general shenanigans, as well as long, care-free summers of exploring the nearby countryside with his brothers and neighbourhood kids, before immigrating to Canada in 1971. Stewart was an accomplished student and athlete in high school, and built a successful career after graduating from the University of Waterloo and attaining CPA, CMA designations.
As anyone could tell you, everyone who met him loved him. He was just as quick with his math skills, his kids calling him the “all knowing, all seeing, all powerful”, as he was with his wit. He always knew how to liven up a room. His ability to pick “good” sports teams was his only lacking quality with his favourite teams including the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Orioles, the Habs however were a good choice.
As was the “Hamilton way”, Stew brought up his kids as savers, buying only what was needed, and only when on sale, of course. All that saving up while we were young paid off in the long run, where for the past few years Stew got to enjoy his own cottage where he could kayak and take a dip before work during covid.
Deeply involved in his Catholic faith, Stew raised his children with the comfort of God. He showed the importance of our beliefs through his actions of love, service, forgiveness, understanding, and empathy. His love for God was shown through the love he had for everyone. Practicing faithfully every Sunday he taught tradition, commitment, and stability for his family. Being on the executive of the Knights of Columbus, Stew and his fellow knights became brothers volunteering in the community.
He was always very involved with his children, from the simple things such as doing their taxes even after they graduated, to always being there and talking through the hard times we have all faced. Of course he got to party with his children too, from the yearly “Hamilton Games” obstacle courses we held to the virtual gaming of more recent times, Stew would spend any moment he could with his children.
We love you forever Dad, now it’s our turn to take care of Mom, and we will continue to heed all the advice you have given us over the years. We will continue to live by the last words he gave Mom, “I love you, have fun.”
Visitation will be on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and 7:00pm – 9:00pm at W.C. Town Funeral Chapel (110 Dundas Street East, Whitby). At the end of the visitation, at 8:30pm, we will all be saying the rosary for Dad, anyone is welcome whether you know the words or not. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 9th, 2022 at 10:30am at St. John the Evangelist Parish (903 Giffard Street, Whitby). The mass will also be live streamed on the St. John the Evangelist website: youtube.com/channel/UCmek-bkCv91AX_g0V5hZzxg . All are welcome. Following mass, we will proceed to Resurrection Catholic Cemetery for the interment. Following interment, we will return to the church’s parish centre for the reception, around 1:00pm.
For the safety of Stewart’s new grandson, Oliver, please note that masks will be mandatory while inside, during the visitation and funeral.
Donations in Dads’ name would be greatly appreciated to the Catholic Missions of Canada Natuashish. They are a small Innu community on Davis Inlet in Labrador, which Dad has previously supported through his work in the Knights of Columbus. If you would like to donate on behalf of Stew, there are two options,
You can donate online at cmic.info/donate/. Please make sure that in the notes you say “in memory of Stewart Hamilton for the mission at Natuashish”. Or you can bring a cheque made payable to the “Knights of Columbus in memory of Stewart Hamilton” c/o St. John the Evangelist Parish 903 Giffard St Whitby L1N 2S2 and they will ensure that the money gets to this small community.
Finally, we would love for everyone to write their favourite memory, or story of Dad. Written on anything, or in the sign-in book provided during the wake, anything from a small moment to a big event, just something for our family to read and remember in the coming weeks.
