Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derrick John Downey. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother was called home on April, 2, 2022 after a courageous fight with cancer.
John, as he liked to go by, was born on August 12, 1961 in St. John’s Newfoundland. He was a spectacular human being. He had an immense heart but sometimes carried it on his sleeve. As a child he was full of mischief that had carried with him through life. He was a kind and loving man who always making sure everyone around him were happy and healthy before himself. He loved his family and friends unconditionally with no judgement or faults.
Leaving to mourn his loving and supportive wife of 42 years Sharon; his two daughters that he adored unconditionally, Andrea (David) and Jennifer (Kyle); his precious granddaughters Hailey, Madison and Lily; sisters and brothers Shirley, Wanda (Jeff), Kim (Colin) Gerald (Rita) and Dave (Sharon); brother-in-law Claude (Judy); circle of nieces and nephews, as well as his good friend Jason (Natasha), special friend Keith (Lois) and godson Nathan.
Predeceased by his father Jack, mother Doris; father-in-law James Colbert; mother-in-law Amelia Colbert; brother Dean; and sister Darlene.
Lastly his beloved dogs, who will miss him terribly, Benj, Jasper and Mika.
Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue with visitations on Monday, April 4, 2022 from 1pm-9pm. Cremation to follow.
Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations in John’s memory may be made to the SPCA.
