Dr. Alan G. Hart, M.D.
It is with much sadness that we announce that Dr. Alan George Hart passed away on March 23, 2022, at the age of 87, at Burlington’s Joseph Brant Hospital following a brief illness.
Al will be forever remembered by his family: children William Alan, Jocelyn, Tim (Kim), Paul (Shari); his grandchildren Catherine and Sophie, Danielle, Harrison and Paulina, Andrew, Cameron and Jamie; spouse Hallie Hart and her children Tim (Summer) and Leanne and their children; and nieces, nephews and relatives in the Hart, Jackson and MacNabb families.
Al grew up in Oshawa with older siblings Buffy and John, where the family operated the Oshawa Dairy. He attended Queen’s University, the alma mater of his mother Hazel, where he met and married Leonor Haw and graduated from medical school (Med’s ‘58).
They settled in Hamilton where Al was a Pediatrician at Chedoke Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and McMaster University Medical Centre when it opened. Al was a faculty member at McMaster’s School of Medicine and a founding Director of Dawn Patrol, a group home for children and youth.
Al and his family enjoyed skiing together at Caledon Ski Club. He taught his children to fish, coached their hockey teams and would head to Colquhoun Park to cheer them on playing baseball.
Al’s love of medicine and helping children took him to Moose Factory’s hospital with his then wife Maureen (Micki) MacMillan where he cared for indigenous children, their mothers and families. He spoke fondly of travelling to the nursing stations up the James Bay coast and he cherished the soapstone carvings he received as thanks for his care.
Al later settled in the North Bay area and was on staff at St. Joseph’s General Hospital. Al met and married Hallie and they enjoyed many years of golfing, ice fishing and life on the shores of Lake Nipissing.
Al lived his later years in Burlington, close to three of his children.
Al had a lifelong love of being in nature and went on many canoe trips with friends and family. He always had a dog or two in his home until his cat Tigger showed up on his doorstep.
Wherever Al lived, he cultivated a special group of friends with whom he enjoyed good food and drinks, and discussions of politics and current events. While in Burlington, a 4 o’clock social group brought him much joy.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, PSWs and other staff at Joseph Brant Hospital for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority in Moose Factory. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 22 from 5-9 pm at Bay Gardens at 1010 Botanical Drive, Burlington. For more info visit www.baygardens.ca
