Obituary
Mary Hunter passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was born in Alresford, England on August 28, 1929 to the late BJ and Nell Burns.
Mary was born to wander. She began her career in London where she trained at Westminster Hospital to become a registered nurse. Within a few years she traveled to Canada to work as an arctic nurse where she met Gerald, a marine biologist and kindred spirit. In the fall of 1956, they were lost in the artic for 18 days when their small Cessna float planes went off course and they were forced to land in the wilderness. This made worldwide news. Her diaries were the inspiration for a radio play about the incident. Throughout her life she and Gerald travelled the globe for business, humanitarian work, and pleasure. She loved to recount the tales of their many adventures. She and Gerald imparted an appreciation for history and geography in their children and grandchildren. Mary was also an avid rock gardener, creating beauty in the tiniest or most barren of spots. She called both Hudson, QC and Brockville, ON home. Her family will miss her deeply.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband John Gerald Hunter and her cherished son John R. Hunter. She is survived by her daughter Anne Tedstone (Bill) of CT, daughter-in-law Karen Hunter of Peterborough, and grandchildren Ryan Tedstone (Amanda), Rachel Tedstone (Chris), and Andrew Hunter.
