Mae Brown

Mae Brown was born on January 29, 1941 on Coward’s Island, Bonavista Bay. She was the only daughter of Kenneth& Blanche (Heffern) Hapgood, who predeceased her in 1985 and 1943 respectively.
In 1958, she married Gerald Brown and they had four children, Arlene, Aubrey, Corinne & Geraldine (Gerri). Mom & dad worked together every day and built a successful farming business in Sandringham. Even after a diagnosis of Huntington’s disease in 1998, mom persevered for many years and continued to make significant contributions to their business, family and community. She never complained or questioned and accepted her fate as a natural part of who she was.
In 2011, mom was widowed and subsequently made her own decision to move into long-term care at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre in Botwood where she set yet another example for her family and made the best of her circumstances. This is just another testament to her strong character. It was there she became affectionately known by the staff as Miss Mae.
On March 22, mom quietly accepted the inevitable and went to join dad. We daresay he had the crib cards dealt by the time she arrived.
Her family thanks all those who treasured her as much as we do. There are some very special people at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Centre who became part of our family during mom’s many years there. The family acknowledges their kindness, compassion and humour over the years of mom’s residency.
With heavy hearts and great memories, we mourn our Miss Mae. she was our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. May she rest in peace.
Arlene (Dick), Aubrey, Corinne (Terry), Gerri (Jim), Granddaughter Nancy (Joe), Grandsons Mark (Patti), Chris (Kayla), Jacob (predeceased his nan 1985), Liam & Owen, Great grandson Solomon, great granddaughters Sadie & Eva, and mom’s half-brother Bruce Ralph.
At the request of Miss Mae, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at Church of the Resurrection in Sandringham on Friday, March 25 at 11 a.m.
The family will be following Covid protocols with masking and social distancing. There is a maximum occupancy of 50 people. If you would like to remember Miss Mae with us, please call Arlene at 709-489-5915 to confirm your attendance.
In lieu of flowers, if people so desire, donations can be made to the Huntington’s Society of Canada or to the Recreation Department at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre in Botwood.
