JONES, David Charles (Dave), FCPA, FCA – passed away on March 2, 2022, in his 90th year. He is survived by his loving and gentle wife of 64 years, Joanna, (nee Vine) and four children: Stephen (Janice Black) of Burlington, Stewart (Jackie) of Pompano Beach, Florida, Susan (Steven Wright) of Houston, BC, and Sandra Milligan (Ben Pickering) of Campbell River, BC. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Darcy and Nicholas Wright; Connor, Maeve, and Erin Milligan; Spencer and Claire Jones; and Tyler and Max Jones, as well as his sister, Kathleen Langlois of Dundas. Dave was particularly proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He was always involved in their lives as much as he could and would travel annually to visit all. Dave was predeceased by his parents Philip (1965) and Bessie (Copeland) (1961) and his brother Doug in 2016.
Dave was born in St. Catharines and in 1950 he started working in the insurance adjusting business in the Welland/Port Colborne area, before switching to the accounting field. At the time of his death, he was a retired partner of Durward Jones Barkwell & Company, of which he was a founding partner. He opened the Welland Office under the name Pollock, Lyttle & Co in 1962. Dave was a member of St. David’s Anglican Church, Welland, St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Haliburton and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ellicottville, New York
Dave was always very active and a passionate leader in community organizations, having served as President of The Kiwanis Club of Welland, the Welland United Way, and the Welland Family YMCA. He also served as a Warden and Treasurer of St. David’s. He was awarded Fellowship in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1988.
In the mid-70’s Dave realized he wanted to spend more time with his family and bought a house in Ellicottville. Many weekends were spent socializing in that community. Dave retired in 1988 and they spent their winters in Ellicottville gaining more and more close friends. He served as a Board Member and Treasurer of HoliMont Ski Club and was a proud member of a ski group The Rogues of HoliMont and the Ken Brown 700 Club.
As lifelong “do-it-yourselfers” and gardeners Joanne and Dave, after their retirement, devoted their summers to their residence on Kushog Lake in Haliburton, which became a meeting place for their children and grandchildren, until Dave’s medical problems forced them to sell the cottage, after 62 years of ownership. Dave got into marathons in his 50’s and got involved in the annual Highland Yard 7K run in Minden. Through this run he began getting involved in fundraising for Places for People in Haliburton since 2014 and in recent years raised over $5,000 each year toward this worthwhile cause. Dave could no longer run the race but with his walker he would trudge on as a leader of the cause. Dave never sat back and watched (except for golf, the Bills and Tiger-Cats).
Cremation has taken place. A private family funeral service will be held at St David’s Anglican, Welland and will be broadcast on their YouTube channel on Friday March 18, 2022, at 2pm and also available for viewing immediately thereafter.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, June 17, 2022, at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club 2-5pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Jones Family Endowment Fund of St. David’s Anglican Church or to a charity of your choice.
