À la mémoire de
Joseph “Pepe” Medal
29 octobre 1923 –
25 février 2022
Joseph (Pepe) Medal, 98, of Toronto, Ontario, passed away peacefully in his sleep at West Park Long Term Care Centre on February 25, 2022. Joseph was born in Mugardos, Spain, and was the third oldest of six children. When Joseph was 12, his father who was a naval officer, was killed in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. At the age of 14, to help support the family, Joseph was taken out of school, entered an apprenticeship program and became an electrical draftsman working at the shipyard in the neighbouring city of El Ferrol. In 1947 he married the love of his life, Maria, and they spent many happy years raising their four children. In 1965 the family immigrated to Canada to provide the children with greater opportunities. Three years after arriving in Toronto, Joseph and Maria happily welcomed their fifth child. As a busy father of five, Joseph got his electrician’s licence from George Brown College and worked as a maintenance electrician at John Inglis until he retired in 1987. He loved spending time with his big family and had great joy as it grew one by one. There’s no doubt that the energy and joy brought to Joseph by his 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren kept his wheels turning for nearly 100 years! Not a bad run for the Canadian Medal patriarch and founding father of so many new Canadian Medals yet to come.
Joseph was a voracious reader and eagerly shared his knowledge and memories in great detail and at great length! He was happy to be engaged in conversation and had a good sense of humour. He enjoyed tinkering with projects at his workbench and passed his handyman skills onto his sons and grandsons. He was always a gentleman, soft spoken with a ready smile and a good deal of patience. He was a shining example of how one can grow old with dignity, humour and kindness and we feel so blessed to have had him in our lives for such an extraordinary length of time.
Joseph was preceded in death by his cherished wife Maria, his daughter-in-law Marlene and son-in-law Juan. He is survived by his loving children and their spouses Joe, Carlos (Lois), John (Cathy), Mary and Robert. Devoted Grandpa to Sara, Judith, David (Jennifer), Michael (Katherine), Richard (Paulette), Thomas, Daniel, and Paul. Adored Great Grandpa to Isabella, Alexandra, Cecilia and James.
He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving family in Spain.
Our sincere thanks and deepest appreciation to the caring staff at West Park Long Term Care Centre for their wonderful care and attention. A private Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3055 Bloor Street W, Etobicoke, on Thursday, March 3, 2022.
