It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Jack Hurley on February 27, 2022. After a courageous battle with ALS, Jack passed away surrounded by family at the age of 76.
Leaving to mourn his wife Sharon (née Walsh) of 51 years, sons Marc (Lynn), Ryan, Andrew (Marguerite), living in Ontario, and Craig (Rachel), living in Pennsylvania. ‘Poppy Jack’ will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Jacob, Jordan, Rebecca, Sophia, Clara, Cressida, Henry and Isaac. He was fortunate to have the support of his brothers Bill (Elizabeth) and Paul; sisters Pat Hurley McDonald, Madonna (Jim) Moffatt and Catherine (Peter) Teed; sisters-in-law Frances (Bob) Furlong, Edwina (Hubert) Hutton and Rosemary (Jim) Burke; and brother-in-law Paul (Paul) Walsh.
Predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth Hurley, sister-in-law Joan Bowne (Dave) and brother-in-law Bob Walsh.
Jack was an avid sports fan and a tremendous athlete. He excelled in baseball and basketball, and enjoyed coaching basketball, hockey and tennis. After retiring from teaching at Gonzaga High School, he taught tennis at Green Belt as well as in Gander, where he loved seeing both young and old take up the sport and he challenged them to become better players. Given his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the tennis hall of fame in the builder category. Jack also had a passion for golf, a sport for which he never missed an opportunity to fit in 18 or squeeze in 36 when travelling to Florida with his golfing buddies, Bud Thorne, Hubert Hutton and Dick Barter.
Caring for a loved one with ALS takes a village, and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported the family and assisted in Jack’s care over the past year. We would also like to thank the ALS Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, which provided significant access to resources so as to allow for treatment and care at home. We would not have been able to do this without the personal home care workers who oversaw Jack’s needs over the past several months. The family would like to personally thank Dr. Dick Barter and Dr. Fraser Clift, who assisted with Jack’s immediate care since his diagnosis. We also wanted to say thanks to his morning coffee gang, who held session with Jack over the past decade, especially over the past several months. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and many, many friends.
Cremation has taken place. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road. Visitation for family and close friends will be held on Thursday, March 3 from 2-6 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, March 4, 2022 at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the ALS Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Heavenly Creatures.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of John Jack Thomas Hurley 2022..
