Edna Winnifred “Sis” (Shaw) Phelan
1933-2022
Edna Winnifred
“Sis” (Shaw) Phelan
July 6, 1933 – February 25,
2022
Edna Winnifred “Sis” (Shaw)
Phelan – age 88, of New Minas, passed away early morning on
Friday, February 25, 2022 in Valley Hospice, Kentville. Born in
Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Percy Waite Shaw and Hazel
Agnes (Reeves).
Edna grew up in Waterville, the youngest child
of six siblings. She married Donald Phelan on February 25, 1954 and
passed away on what would have been their 68th
anniversary. Edna and Don moved into his family home in Greenwich, his
job with the Department of Highways took him away from home a lot,
summers they packed up and went wherever the job site was, making many
lifetime friends.
Edna knew grief as her third child passed away
suddenly at the age of five. Her husband passed away at the early age
of 51, she then made her home at the New Minas Senior Complex for over
30 years. She had many friends and neighbours, whether it was from
Bingo, playing cards, the ‘machines’, or getting a
great flea market deal – which we can all attest to, by the
many treasures that surrounded her.
She is survived by her children, JoAnne (Ron)
Bezanson, Donald Richard “Rick” (Patti) Phelan and
Mary Jane Phelan (Albert); GG to grandchildren, Lisa (John) Andrew,
Troy Bezanson, Amanda Fredericks (Nathan) and Ashley (Adam) Mahoney;
great-grandchildren, Ella (Ben), Sarah, Isabella, Isaiah (Shailan),
Ezra, Daisy, Emmy, Jakob, Drake and Elliot; great great-grandchildren,
Nima, Kian and Anneliese; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by
her husband, Donald Bishop Phelan; son, William Paul
“Billy” Phelan; and siblings, William
“Bill” (Dot) Shaw, Blake (Dot) Shaw, Edith
“Edie” Shaw, Johnny Shaw and Carl
Shaw.
Edna’s family would like to express
their sincere thanks of appreciation to the staff at VON and Valley
Hospice for the great care she received.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of
Edna’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will
take place in Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory may
be made to Open Arms or Valley Hospice. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the
