Obituary for Dorothy June McDonald
D. June McDonald, long-time resident of Thornhill
In her 100th year, D. June McDonald (nee Pidgeon) gently departed this life on Friday February 11, 2022. After a 36-year interval, she re-joined her husband of over 37 years, John Arthur (Jack) McDonald.
June was pre-deceased by her parents, Alec and Mildred Pidgeon of Peterborough, her sister Beverly Anderson (Jim) of Richmond Hill, and her sister-in-law Jean Evans of Peterborough.
June leaves her daughter, Judith Andrew (David) and son James (Merichelda…Etchel) and grandchildren Matthew Andrew (Paul), Jocelyn June Andrew, Melissa Andrew (Shane), Michelle McDonald and Michael McDonald.
She will be missed by her nieces and nephew: Kim Davison (Jim) of Toronto and Karen Venditti (Ron Ley) of Sharon; Dale Wilson (Brian), and Tom Evans (Nancy) both of Peterborough. Also remembered by her great nieces and nephews, mostly in the GTA: Tom Davison (Emily), Gillian Davison; Alex Venditti (Brittany), Stephen Venditti (Caterina), Mark Venditti; Jeff Thompson (Amanda) of Australia, Danielle Thompson (Matthew Perrie) of London, Sara Williamson (Paul), Tim Wilson (Donna), Mike Wilson (Leigh); Kerri Baron (Ryan) and Jill Evans of Vancouver.
June was born in December 1922, just missing the previous pandemic. She married Jack at Thanksgiving 1948 in Peterborough, moving to Thornhill in 1962 when Jack was transferred by Bell Canada. The family kept the connection to Peterborough, cottaging on Chemong Lake in the Kawarthas from 1964.
A paralegal for John Corkery in Peterborough, June worked for Town of Markham Public Libraries in late career. June joined and volunteered heavily in the community, including: Thornhill Presbyterian Church, Thornhill Lionettes (at the time when Lions Club raised funds to build the Thornhill Community Centre), Thornhill Village Festival organizing committee, and later with her sister she joined Masonic Lodge.
In 1958 June joined IODE in Peterborough and her dedicated service at all levels in the ensuing years earned her a National Life Membership. IODE education work took her to Nain Labrador, at precisely the time of 9/11. June was elected National President IODE at the 2002 AGM in Kelowna and served in that role for two years, plus many more years on the National Executive Committee and other national committees.
June read voraciously and travelled widely and her many interests over the years ranged from playing piano, bridge (four clubs), through oil painting and various sports (golf, boating, swimming, skiing, curling, bowling).
An immediate family funeral has taken place, with a fitting memorial being planned for later in the spring when COVID is behind us.
