À la mémoire de
Marjorie Devine
28 juillet 1936 –
22 février 2022
Marjorie Devine lived a life full of family and friends, travel and the arts. She was teacher, a writer, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and dear friend. Marjorie enjoyed opera and walks in her neighbourhood and on the beach in Florida. She read two books a week and turned to books on tape recently when her eyesight failed.
She died February 22, 2021, at age 85 in Toronto.
Marjorie (Lamont) Devine was born on July 28, 1936, in Sydenham Township, Ontario and grew up on a farm near Annan with her parents Fraser and Florence Lamont and siblings Merle and Roger.
Marjorie graduated from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1959. She taught in Southern Ontario and at Toyo Eiwa Girls School, Tokyo. She was also an occasional teacher in Thunder Bay, Iroquois Falls and Etobicoke for 33 years. In Iroquois Falls she met the love of her life of 56 years, Thomas (Mickey) Devine.
Her community involvement brought her joy and new friendships. She was a blood donor, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Dorothy Ley Hospice and was president of group of occasional Etobicoke teachers for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.
An active member of the University Women’s Club Etobicoke, a book club, bridge groups and “Walk and Talk” group, she set a fast pace while showing keen interest in people’s stories.
She wrote the memoir Irma in 1993, about her Estonian friend that was also published in Estonian. Her next book William Thain: The Violin Teacher will be published in 2022.
Marjorie is survived by husband Mickey, sister Merle (Gene) Fedirchuk, children Michael and Carol, grandchildren Sasha and Veronica and many much-loved in-laws, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Thank you to the wonderful staff at Parkland Eglinton and Nurse Next Door. A private celebration of life will be held later. A tree can be planted in her honour at A Living Tribute.
